Marquette Sentinels Hockey Advances With 7-1 Win Over Escanaba

Marquette, MIFebruary 22, 2024 The Marquette Sentinel hockey team hosted the Escanaba Eskymos at Lakeview Arena on Thursday night in the regional semifinal round. Joe Gaffney and Larry Carrey were live with the coverage on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!

Marquette struck first with a rebound goal scored by Nash Riipi in the first :40. Both goaltenders would stay busy throughout the period. Sentinel goaltender Parker Nevenhoven would make a huge breakaway save in the middle part of the first, getting the better end a 1v1. Escanaba would struggle to keep the puck on their sticks at times with Marquette forcing several turnovers. C.J. Carter would find the back of the net for the Marquette Sentinels off the redirect from Riipi. Escanaba would continue to shots on net, but couldn’t get it past Nevenhoven. Marquette would take a 3-0 lead with another goal from Adam Heikkila with under 2:00 in the first period.

The Sentinels would continue to pile it on at the start of the second. Connor Stade would split the defenders and send it by Cully Hayes for the 4-0 lead. Marquette would land themselves in the penalty box. On the following face off Nolan Bink would get Escanaba on the scoreboard with the help from Ben Sands for the D-to-D power play goal. Stade would answer back with a power play goal himself immediately after an Eskymo penalty. The Sentinels would keep on the gas and take a 6-1 lead with a goal from Caleb Fries just a few moments later.

Escanaba won the face off to start the third period and would register a shot that would be snatched by the glove of Nevenhoven. The Sentinels would suffer a major blow when Nash Riipi would make his way off the ice against a hit on the boards.  Marquette would get a 5-on-3 power play but wouldn’t be able to cash in on the power play. Escanaba would give themselves a couple of scoring opportunities, but the goal tending of Marquette continue to dominate. The Sentinels would score in the final :30 of play with another goal for Fries.
