Marquette Redmen Wrap Up Regular Season With Victory Over Houghton 4-3, Become Great Lakes Co-Champs

Houghton, MI February 16, 2023 – The number four ranked team in the state, Marquette Redmen (15-6-2) traveled to the Copper Country Thursday to face off against the number two ranked Houghton Gremlins (22-1-0). The game was live from Dee Stadium with John Thomsen and Joe Gaffney on the call.

At 5:57 Marquette cashed in on a power play with Adam Heikkila getting the pass from Nash Riipi to get the Redmen on the board first. The Redmen kept their foot on the gas with another goal at the 8:37 mark with Nash Riipi creating a scoring opportunity finished by Caleb Fries with the goal. The Gremlins started to battle back near the end of the period to try and gain some momentum going into the first intermission. Marquette was able to stifle their attempts and close the first with the lead.

1st: Marquette 2 – Houghton 0

The Redmen added on another goal early on in the second after a crucial icing call that went against Houghton. The Gremlins looked to try and claw back after finding themselves with a man advantage. However it would be Marquette that would cash in, Jake Garrow would breakaway after a Riipi pass and bury it in the net for the short handed goal. Houghton peppered goalie, Cole Kelly who would come up with a couple great saves on the Gremlin power play. Houghton would finally get one past Kelly at 11:10 with a Camden Markham goal.  The Gremlins had another power play chance and made the most of it with a goal from Jace Deforge to bring the game within two.

2nd: Marquette 4 – Houghton 2

Houghton started the third bringing pressure into the Marquette zone with a pair of physical plays against the Redmen, leading to Nash Riipi having to exit the game. Marquette had great scoring opportunities with a pair of shots hitting the crossbar by Caleb Fries and C.J. Carter. The Gremlins would find an opening in front of the net in traffic, and Hudson Markham would push the puck past the line to make it a one goal game. The Redmen continued to fight off the Gremlins as Houghton tried to pick up the tempo in the final minutes. The Redmen were able to fend off the offensive onslaught by Houghton and skate away with a win.

FINAL: Marquette 4 – Houghton 3

The win tonight gave the Marquette Redmen a share of the Great Lakes conference along with the Gremlins. They are back in action next Friday as they travel down to Alpena to face off against Manistee in the first game of the postseason. The Redmen finish the regular season with a 16-6-2 record and co-champions of the Great Lakes conference.
