Marquette Redmen Hockey wins against the Negaunee Miners 8-0 on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!
- Updated: January 20, 2022

Marquette, MI – January 20th, 2022 – The Marquette Redmen faced off the Negaunee Miners at home, beating them 8-0 on a mercy call in the last period. The Redmen improve their record to 13-3-1 and look to get a winning streak started. John Thompsen and Joe Gaffney had the call live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!

Opening Face-Off between the Miners and Redmen
1Q: Marquette opened up the game with a flurry of shots by Kody Moyer, Brayden Grange, Dylan King, and Drew Dellies. All the shots could not find the net but the Redmen definitely came out with the intention of making their offensive pressure known. Going in 5 minutes of the game, the Redmen strike first as Cole Ranta shoots a rocket 25ft out putting it top shelf glove side. On a turnover, Freeze gets to take the puck down by himself, shoots and misses but Tucker Welch rebounds and passes to Caleb Fries, making his second shot attempt putting up the Redmen 2-0 with 3 minutes left in the first period. With under 40 seconds to go in the period, Moyer was able to squeeze in and bank a shot off a rebound off of Ryan Kerkela save, bringing the lead to three. The Redmen showed off their defensive and offensive prowess by having the shot count 26 to the Miners 5.
End of 1st: Marquette 3, Negaunee 0
2Q: The Redmen continued their onslaught of shots, keeping the Miners feeling the pressure. Kerkela was seeing a lot of rubber tonight as he was constantly under attack. Colin Nemacheck was able to skate by his defender and fire in a shot making the score 4-0. Jack Sides gets in the action by firing off a shot, deflecting off Kerkela and Ranta getting the rebound and making it 5-0 Marquette. To give some perspective, with just 4 minutes left, Marquette had 18 shots vs Negaunee’s 1 in the period alone. Jacob Garrow gets the pass to Fries, shoots right off the pass making the shot with under 3 minutes to play in the second period. To give credit to Kerkela, Nagunee’s goalie, he was able to block a barrage of shots that would have probably gone in under different keepers. After the second period, Marquette got their shot tally to 53 and Negaunee to just 6.
End of 2nd: Marquette 6, Negaunee 0

3Q: Just 10 seconds into the period, Tony DeMattia wins the opening face-off, passes to Ethan Phillips and shoots glove side top shelf making the score 7-0, 1 more goal away from a mercy game. Miners get in trouble with a tripping foul sending a miners player into the box and making them vulnerable for an easy goal. With Marquette looking to take advantage of the power play and end the game, they unleash a fury of shots. Unfortunately, Kirkala would save all the shots reaching the net and ending the power play for the Redmen. Theo Adams would take matters into his own hands and shoots the puck that gets deflected but gets the puck passed back to him, shooting again making the shot and ending the game on a mercy call with 5 minutes into the third period. The final shot count was Redmen 63 to the Miners 6.
End of Game: Marquette 8, Negaunee 0
The Joe Boogren Player of the Game was awarded to Cole Ranta.
Next Game: The Marquette Redmen play next on Thursday January 27th. The game is still to be determined for the opponent. The call will be made live on 103.3 WFXD!
