It was a slow start for Marquette, but the Redmen gained momentum quickly in the opening minutes of the game. Dylan Baldwin struck first for the Redmen, with Jakob Peterson on the assist, to give Marquette the 1-0 lead early in the first period.
The Gremlins remained in the game, staying strong in the face-off throughout the period. A Houghton power play goal from Niko Rajala came with just under two minutes to go to tie it up at 1-1.
Houghton came out swinging early in the second period. The Gremlins pulled out front for the first time in the game with a goal from Carson Stevens, assisted by Tucker Tapani, to bring the score to 2-1 and just three minutes gone.
Marquette experienced some bad luck late in the period against a fearsome Gremlin team. First, a Redmen goal was waved off just after a referee blew his whistle to end the play. Then, Houghton’s Tapani scored a penalty goal after a little scrum formed on the ice and the whistle blew against Marquette again. The goal brought the Gremlin lead to 3-1. The Redmen struggled to get their feet back under them as time ticked down.
Marquette gained a little traction early in the third period. An Ansel Frost goal, with assistance from Gaetano Cammarata, put the Redmen within one goal as they improved to 3-2 behind the Gremlins. The rest of the period, however, did not go the way of the Redmen as Houghton took home the 3-2 victory this evening.
The Redmen are back in action on Tuesday, December 3rd on 97.5 GTO. Tune in for pregame at 6:30 pm; the puck drops at 7:00 pm!
