Marquette Redmen Hockey Defeats Negaunee Miners 8-0 in Mercy Rule Win
- Updated: February 11, 2021

Negaunee, MI – February 11, 2021 – The Marquette Redmen hockey team got back on track with an 8-0 victory over the Negaunee Miners at the Negaunee Ice Arena on Thursday evening. After having dropped their season opener 2-1 to Calumet, the Redmen were eager to notch a win for the first time in 2021.
Negaunee started the game strong, generating two early scoring opportunities but converting on neither. Marquette responded with several opportunities of their own, including odd-man rushes and a breakaway, but Negaunee goalie Ryan Kerkela stood tall in the net. Kerkela made save after save, denying Marquette until Jackson Potulny beat him top-shelf with 8:55 to go in the opening frame to put the Redmen up 1-0. Potulny doubled up a few minutes later on a Marquette power play, then completed the natural hat-trick with 35 seconds to go in the period. No further scoring occurred before the buzzer, and the first period ended 3-0 in favor of the Marquette Redmen.
First Period Score: Marquette 3, Negaunee 0

Marquette’s Evan Kroll scored a minute after the second period began, bringing the score to 4-0 Redmen. Kroll netted another goal shortly thereafter, and then completed his own natural hat-trick with 10:00 to go in the second to put the Redmen up 6-0. Negaunee elected to change netminders at this point, calling on Patrick Klumpp in an attempt to stop the bleeding. Dylan Baldwin scored a short-handed goal on one of the first few shots that Klumpp faced, however, and Marquette’s offense didn’t slow down from there. Another short-handed goal from Jack Sides made the score 8-0, and that’s how the period ended, giving Marquette the 8-0 mercy rule win after two periods.
Final Score: Marquette 8, Negaunee 0 (Two Periods)
