Chelsea, MI – January 28th 2022 – The Marquette Redmen faced off against the Capital City Capitals. The Redmen come out victorious in a 6-2 win against the Capital City Capitals. The call was made live by John Thompsen and Joe Gaffney on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!

Marquette Redmen playing against the Capital City Capitals
1st Period: Marquette opened up the game winning the opening face-off. Owen Riipi had an open lane, skates down, and shoots a rocket but misses just wide. The Redmen, like most of the season, applied offensive pressure early and often. Marquette’s Jacob Garrow fed the puck to Brayden Grange who passes to Colin Nemacheck at the point. Wasting no time Nemacheck fires off a rocket and makes the shot scoring the games first goal. Immediately after, Nemacheck comes up with the puck, skates down the puck and somehow gets the puck over to Garrow at the goal line who slaps it in, extending their lead to 2. Redmen’s defense was very strong, only allowing a couple of shots and consistently finding themselves with the puck. Caleb Fries found himself in the right place at the right time as a shot deflected off the Capital’s goalie lands perfectly for Fries, shooting the puck in the goal and giving the Redmen a 3-0 lead. The Redmen closed the period with 17 shots to the Capitals 2 and with a three point lead.
End of 1st: Marquette 3, Capital City 0

2nd Period: Capital City would mimic Chelsea’s strategy from yesterdays game as they came out of the intermission with some energy and purpose. The Capitals had a few dangerous on target shots but Anna Byczek would save them all. With under 10 minutes to play, the Capitals would fire off a shot that Byczek would deflect, but Capital City’s Leo Clement was there to pick up the rebound and slap the puck in cutting into the lead 3-1. Marquette would be given a power play after a slashing call on Capital City with 8 minutes to play. Capital City had a great penalty kill and did not allow any real threat to develop from the Redmen. Byczek would again make a phenomenal save after a Capital breakaway. The Redmen would respond to the earlier goal by the Capitals with Nash Riipi receiving the puck and shooting it with his backhand and making the shot, 4-1 Marquette. During a Capitals power play, Capital City would also respond with Max Tyler winning a draw and shooting the puck flying past Byczek and cutting the lead 4-2. The excitement would not stop there as Marquette would fly down the rink, Joe Dimattia rifling a shot from the blue line and making the shot, 5-2 Marquette. Marquette would end the period shooting 11 shots to the Capitals 8.
End of 2nd Period: Marquette 5, Capital City 2

3rd Period: The Redmen would come out of the intermission attacking the Capitals defense. Kody Moyer had a close shot that was miraculously saved by Capital City’s goalie, Wandle. Marquette was awarded a power play as the Capitals had too many men on the rink. Wandle would face a barrage of shots as Moyer, Grange, and Garrow would all have great shots in the power play. None of the shots found its way into the net with quality play and saves by the Capitals goalie and killing the penalty. With just under 10 minutes to go, Capital City would be called for holding and give another power play to the Redmen. Marquette would take advantage of this power play as Cole Ranta was able to get the puck down by the goal line and make a goal with 8 minutes to go in the game, 6-2 Marquette. The Redmen had full control of the last period, only allowing the Capitals 2 shots to Redmen’s 16. The game would end with a victory for the Marquette Redmen.
End of Game: Marquette 6, Capital City 2
The Joe Boogren Player of the game was awarded to Jacob Garrow
