Houghton, MI – February 23, 2021 – The Marquette Redmen hockey team took the Jeffers Jets to task tonight in Houghton at the Student Development Complex (SDC) on Michigan Tech’s campus on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
Play started off a bit slow, but Marquette brought their game faces. As the Redmen got their skates under them, they successfully cleared a penalty kill to keep their season record alive. Marquette has cleared 100% of their penalty kills in 2021.
Owen Riipi nabbed the first goal with help from Brayden Grange at the 10:53 mark in the first period. The Redmen enjoyed the early 1-0 lead over the Jets going into the second period.
The pace of play was much quicker at the start of the second. The Redmen got a couple of good looks at the Jets’ goal before Jackson Potulny, with help from Joe DeMattia, scored a wraparound goal on a power play to give Marquette a 2-0 lead.
DeMattia, this time with help from Riipi, followed up in short order with a goal of his own to give the Redmen a comfortable 3-0 lead. The Redmen wrapped up the second period with a third goal from Ethan Phillips, with help from Potulny and Joseph Luke, to bring the score to 4-0 and just a few minutes to go.
Jeffers came right out of the gate in the third period with their first and only score of the night. The Jets improved to 4-1 behind the Redmen. Marquette responded in short order with a goal from Brayden Grange to give the Redmen the four-goal edge once again, the score 5-1. Grange came up with a beautiful unassisted goal shortly thereafter to bring the score to 6-1 with 10 minutes to go in the game.
The Redmen sailed to victory easily, though no more goals were scored by either team in the waning moments of the game. The score settled at 6-1, Marquette on a little winning streak heading into Friday night’s game.
