Marquette’s Football Season Ends on the Road Against Mt. Pleasant on 103.3 WFXD!

Mt. Pleasant, MI October 29, 2021 – The Marquette Redmen hit the road for playoff football on Friday night! For the second year in a row they traveled down to Mt. Pleasant to face the Oilers. The game was broadcast live on 103.3 WFXD and streamed online.

1Q: Marquette recieved the opening kickoff of Friday’s match-up. They kept things on the ground to start the game. The Redmen ate up a lot of clock in the first quarter by marching their way down the field. It all came to an end when Redmen quarterback Austin Ridl threw a pick to the Oiler’s Max Humprey.

The Oilers were able to make a statement right off the bat. Running back Kory Davis powered his way through the middle to move the chains on the first play. A costly penalty drove Mt. Pleasant back to a 3rd and 18 scenario. They were able to gain an additional 12 yards before punting the ball back to Marquette.

The Redmen got the ball moving with some help from Desmond Mullen. Another costly interception to Humprey would put the Oilers in great field position. Mt. Pleasant was able to capitalize on the turnover with an 11yd pitch-and-catch from Ryan McIntyre to Scooter Polk. The Redmen found themselves down a score to end the first quarter of play, 7-0.

2Q: The Redmen couldn’t get their offense going and were forced to punt the ball back to Mt. Pleasant. The Oilers were able slow things down and eat up some clock by keeping things on the ground. Kory Davis was their lead back on the drive, but it was Max Humprey who was able to find a lane and run 23yds for the touchdown. The point after attempt was good, and the Oilers lead grew to 14-0.

After Marquette went 3-and-out once again, Mt. Pleasant kept things on the ground and picked up the pace of the game. After showing the Redmen different offensive looks they were able to move their way deep into Redmen territory. The Marquette defense was able to hold and only allow a 25yd field goal from Tyler Hutchins. The Oilers built up their lead to, 17-0.

Marquette was finally able to find a rhythm and moving the chains. With the help on the ground from Desmond Mullen and Dustin Lohfink the Redmen found themselves shy of the endzone yet again. Rylan Kohler took the field and split the uprights for a 23yd field goal to finally put the Redmen on the board, 17-3.

3Q: The Oilers offense took the field to start the second half of the game, but went 3-and-out as the Marquette defense came out ready to play. Desmond Mullen and the Redmen offense moved the ball well to start things off. Quarterback Austin Ridl dropped back and scrambled his way into Oiler territory on a 41yd rush. After the play Ridl was hit out of bounds and was taken out, leaving Justin Jurmu to come in and try to finish the drive. Not able to reach the endzone, coach Eric Mason opted to kick the field goal. Rylan Kohler put it in from 33yds out and closed the gap, 17-6.

Mt. Pleasant got the ball back and was chipping away at the Marquette defense. With a big run from Kory Davis for 26 yards, the Oilers offense looked to be firing on all cylinders. However the Redmen defense had different plans. Wyatt Kuhlmann planted Oiler quaterback Ryan McIntyre for the sack and cause Mt. Pleasant to punt the ball away. Marquette couldn’t make anything happen offensively and gave the ball back to the Oilers to end the quarter.

4Q: The Oilers started on their own 12 line to start the quarter. A 76yd rush from Max Humprey brought them from one 12 yard line to the other. The next couple plays later Kory Davis was able to cross the plane into paydirt for another Mt. Pleasant score, 24-6.

3 year starter for the Redmen, quarterback Austin Ridl, made his way back into the game. He handed the ball off to Mullen for a 13yd gain on the play, before taking to the air and giving back to Mt. Pleasant. Aiden Klein came away with the interception and the offense came back on to the field. It didn’t take long for the Oilers to strike either. Max Humprey once again answered the call and made his way to the endzone with a 37yd rushing touchdown.. The point after was good and things looked bleak for the Redmen, 31-6.

The Oilers would add on yet another touchdown, while the Redmen failed to add any points to the board and their  season came to an end.

The Marquette Redmen finish the season 7-3  including the playoff loss, and co-champions of the Great Northern Conference. The Redmen have a lot to look forward to with their football program of the future. A lot of underclassmen making their way up to varsity, and some already had playing time this year! The seniors leave the field with some playing their last game, and some looking to play at the next level. Whichever the case they had a fantastic, winning career as a part of the Marquette Redmen football team. We here would like to wish them all the best of luck!
