Marquette Redmen Mercies Manistique Emeralds in Varsity Baseball on Fox Sports Marquette

Marquette, MI – April 22, 2021 – It was opening day for the 2021 Marquette Redmen season as they hosted the Mansitique Emeralds in varsity baseball action on Thursday evening. The game was live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!

Marquette vs Manistique
Emerald catcher Bryce Blixt was struck out to start the game by Redmen starting pitcher, Brady Wright. Parker Graphos would walk to first then end up stealing second base. Jack McEvers hit a single that led to an error that allowed Graphos to score. Elmer Zellar would hit a double for the Emeralds to put two in scoring position. Jude Way would make his way to first off an error that also scored two more runs for the Emeralds, before a John Lund strikeout would end the top half of the first.
Marquette led off with a strikeout as well with Carson Sprader on the bump for Manistique. Peter VandenAvond would hit a single and steal second, opening up the base for Erik Johnson to be walked to first. Pitcher Brady Wright would hit a sacrifice fly to bring in VandenAvond. Ashton Demboski would record a double and hit Erik Johnson home. The inning would end with a Redmen strikeout.
Marquette would make a pitching change in the top part of the second, bringing Peter VandenAvond from shortstop to pitch. Brady Wright would finish his outing 1.2IP, 4K, 2Er, 1 BB. VandenAvond would finish the inning striking out Graphos of the Emeralds.

Redmen VS Emeralds
Scoring would pick back up in the top half of the third inning. Manistique’s Way would hit in McEvers bringing the Emerald’s lead to, 4-2. Marquette would pick up the pace stringing together some runs. Erik Johnson would bring VandenAvond home with an RBI Triple. Brady Wright would then hit Johnson home with a single to tie things up. Ashton Demboski would hit a double to bring Wright home, and give the Redmen the 5-4 lead.
Bryce Blixt would get on base to start the fourth inning off for the Emeralds. He would be hit home by Elmer Zellar, and Snider would move to second. Jude Way would bring Zellar and Snider home and bring the Emeralds the lead, 7-5. The Redmen would allow another hit before ending the inning on a strikeout.
Things would breakdown for the Emeralds in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Erik Johnson would be walked to first and then steal second. Brady Wright would also get on base by balls to bring two baserunners for Marquette. The Emeralds pitcher Sprader was closing in on his 100 pitch limit before being replaced by Ian Brow. Brow would walk the first batter he saw before a balk allowed a runner to score. The Emeralds would walk in a total of seven runs in the inning. Alex Applekamp would hit a 3-run double on his second at-bat of the inning. The RBI’s would bring the Marquette lead to, 15-7.
Marquette would strike out the side to start the sixth inning. The Emeralds couldn’t turn their luck around and walked in the final two runs to put Marquette up by 10 runs after the fifth inning, which implements the ‘mercy rule.’ Marquette comes away with the win 17-7.
