Sault Ste. Marie, MI – January 20, 2018 – The Marquette Redmen hockey team fell to the Traverse City West Titans by a score of 2-1 on Saturday, in a game that was broadcast live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 and online at foxsportsmarquette.com. The Redmen, who defeated Flint Powers the previous night 5-3, were unable to keep their winning streak alive against the Titans.
The first period began with the Marquette Redmen controlling play on both sides of the puck, scoring the game’s first goal at the 3:19 mark on a shot by Aydin Frost. The Titans equalized on a powerplay goal halfway through the period, and at the end of one, the score was tied at one goal apiece.
The second period was rather uneventful until late in the frame, when the Redmen appeared to score the go-ahead goal. Tanner Phillips put the puck into the net off of a rebound, but the referee waved the goal off because he had lost sight of the puck and blown his whistle before the shot. Marquette was further unlucky as the Titans scored to go ahead 2-1, even though it appeared that the clock had run out before the goal was scored. After a short discussion, the referees upheld the goal call, and the period ended with the Traverse City West Titans in the lead 2-1.
The third period saw both teams come out with renewed energy, and Marquette played hard despite quite a bit of fatigue to try and tie the game. Although the Redmen had their fair share of opportunities, they were unable to muster the tying goal, and the game ended 2-1 in favor of Traverse City West.
The Marquette Redmen will next hit the ice on Thursday, January 25, when they take on the Kingsford Flivvers. The puck will drop on that game at 7:00 P.M., and you can catch all the action on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 and online at foxsportsmarquette.com.
