The Redmen started off with possession but had to punt it away, the Blue Devils getting their hands on the ball quickly in the opening quarter. Marquette’s defense got right to work though.

\Dustin Lohfink put a stop to Kristopher Pearce on the drive. Brady Wright followed up with a safety for two points to give Marquette an early 2-0 lead over the Blue Devils.

Marquette was able to keep a Sault response at bay as the first quarter came to a close. Desmond Mullen had a massive tackle to put a stop to a last ditch Blue Devil drive and usher the Redmen into the second quarter with the lead.

A little luck went the way of the Redmen early in the second quarter. Marquette took over inside the Sault 15-yard line after another Blue Devils mistake on the snap.

It was a battle of the defenses early in the game.

The Redmen did not waste their opportunity. Kameron Karp came up with the catch and zipped into the end zone to snag the first touchdown of the game. Marquette took the 9-0 lead after the kick.

The Blue Devils could not eek out a touchdown, but it was not for lack of effort. The Redmen defense had answers to every move the Sault made as they made their way down the field. Marquette took their 9-0 lead into the half.

John Robinson opened the 3rd quarter with a 14-yd run for Sault Ste. Marie. Kristopher Pearce turned on the jets and punched into the end zone to get the Blue Devils on the board early in the second half. A successful two-point conversion brought the score to 9-8, Marquette just barely in the lead.

Marquette struggled on their next drive, handing over possession to the Sault very quickly. The Redmen could not put a stop to the Blue Devils this time. John Robinson wrapped up a strong push into the end zone, zipping in from 4 yards out to give the Sault the lead. Another successful two-point conversion brought the score to 16-9.

Brady Wright peeled off 12 yards on the next drive down to the Blue Devil 28-yard line to inject some life back into the Redmen offense.

After a couple of setbacks, Austin Ridl found David Eberhard for a 31-yard gain down to the 12-yard line. Kameron Karp finished off the drive with a leaping catch in the end zone for the touchdown. The kick tied it up at 16-16 going into the fourth quarter.

Desmond Mullen got things going in the fourth. Mullen snagged a huge interception and took the ball down to the Blue Devils 46-yard line to give the Redmen a boost early on. Wright followed that up with a 22-yard run to set the Redmen on a what seemed to be sure path to recapturing the lead.

The Blue Devils, however, regained possession on a slightly overthrown pass right into the hands of a Sault player to give them the momentum they needed in the waning minutes of the final quarter.

Jakob Davie found Bennette Swanson late in the quarter to get down to the two-yard line. It didn’t take much for Sault Ste. Marie to take the lead from there. An unsuccessful two-point conversion put the score at 22-16, giving Marquette a glimmer of hope for a last ditch effort.

Unfortunately, the Redmen just did not have the time. The Blue Devils got it done against Marquette with a 22-16 victory, their first in five years against the Redmen.
