Marquette Redmen Drop a Close Game On the Road to the Escanaba Eskymos 61-57

Escanaba, MI – February 11, 2021 – The Redmen were on the road Thursday night to meet with the Escanaba Eskymos for a boys varsity basketball match-up. The game ended in the Eskymos favor in overtime 61-57.

First Half

A lot of back and forth to start the game, but Escanaba would score the first points of the contest. Marquette battled quite a size advantage headed in with all but two of the Eskymos under 6ft tall. Ty Lotterman would get the Redmen on the board bringing the score to 4-2 in favor of the Eskymos. Marquette would then get red hot going on a 13-0 run started by Lincoln Seager hitting back to back 3-point shots. Jordan DeMay would then follow suit with a 3-pointer of his own, and building the Redmen lead to 13-4.

Carter Hudson would then get revenge for the Eskymos by landing a 3-point shot of his own closing the lead down to 13-7. His teammate Jared Hanson would also land a 3-pointer cutting the Redmen lead to 13-11, and becoming the second player in the point column for Escanaba.

Trevor Brown struck first in the 2nd quarter for Escanaba and gave his team the lead. It wasn’t for long however as Connor Johnson and Owen Beauchamp nailed shots from behind the arc to take back the lead for the Redmen, adding to their lead 19-15.  The two teams would battle back and forth playing great defense with physical play. Marquette would keep their long-range theme with another 3 pointer bringing their lead to 22-17.  With the half coming to and end, Marquette’s Lincoln Seager was able to make a buzzer beater and close out the half for the Redmen with the lead.

Escanaba came out strong putting two scores together closing the gap 27-21. Marquette would answer back and continue to build on their lead with Kameron Karp laying a shot up making the score 32-25. Each team had a slight difficulty finishing at the basket until Connor Smale of the Eskymos drained a 3-point shot moving within 4 of the Redmen.

The fourth quarter started off strong for Escanaba as they were able to snag their first lead since the start of the game, 37-34. There were a lot of back and forth baskets and Lotterman for the Redmen tied it up 42-42. Escanaba stepped up their defense, and kept the next few minutes low scoring. The final minute started with DeMay for Marquette tying it up with free-throws. Collin Hudson responded by taking the lead back for the Eskymos. Marquette takes a time out with :10 left on the clock and down by 2. Marquette gets the ball down low and able to draw the foul. Lotterman for the Redmen then went 2-2 at the line and sent the game into extra time, 42-42

Escanaba scored first for overtime, and the play went back and forth with each time failing to put it in the basket. Victorson for Escanaba was able to put up 3 points the hard way for the Eskymos, and Lotterman responded with the exact play for Marquette making the score 51-37.  Kameron Karp was able to throw up a prayer and it was answered with a  3-point bucket making it a 2 point game in favor of the Eskymos. Marquette wasn’t able to get the ball back in extra time and fell to the Eskymos 61-57 for the final.
