Marquette Redmen Coming Home With Victors Cup 53-45 Against Negaunee
- Updated: February 18, 2021

Negaunee, MI – February 18, 2021 – The Redmen took the short trip down US-41 to Negaunee for a rivalry match-up where the winner takes home The Victor’s Cup. There was not shortage of competition in this match-up either.

Marquette Free Throws
First Half: The battle for The Victor’s Cup started off slightly slow going. Each team started the game very composed, not giving up many chances. Neguanee opened up the scoring with Nick Jacobetti getting the team on the board. Gerald Johnson for the Miners would do his part and nail a 3-pointer to put Negaunee up 7-0. Marquette would then turn it on and answer with a couple of 3-point shots of their own. They’d top it off with a Jordan DeMay put-back shot and give the Redmen the lead, 8-7. Gerald Johnson wouldn’t let the Redmen get comfortable as he pieced a 3-point play together the hard way. Marquette would close scoring for the first quarter with a Ty Lotterman steal and dish to Lincoln Sager and tie things up.
Justin Jurmu for Marquette drained a three to give the Redmen back the lead to start the second quarter. Connor Johnson would hit a shot from behind the arc and put Marquette up 16-12. Negaunee’s defense really showed up tonight creating a turnover leading to Gerald Johnson tying up the game 16-16. The two teams would continue to fight for points to finish the half with Marquette leading Neguanee by one.
Halftime: 25-24

Second Half: Marquette came out of the second half with youth on the court. They didn’t disappoint as junior guard, Axel Vermaat drained a 3-pointer making it a two-possession game. Miner sophomore, Mason Sager responded with a three of his own closing the Redmen lead to one, 28-27. Eli Luokkala would tie things up for the Miners, but Jordan DeMay would take the lead right back with a 3-pointer and give the Redmen back the lead. The third quarter remained very close and back and forth, with Eli Luokkala hitting a buzzer beater and tying things up going into the final quarter of play.

Negaunee Three-Pointer
Marquette started the fourth quarter in the bonus, giving them free-throws when fouled. The used that to build a three point lead, 41-39. Negaunee’s top scorer Luokkala hit a shot off the glass and closed the lead to one. Justin Jurmu and the Marquette defense proved to be too much for the Miner offense, and eventually gave the Redmen the win.
Final: 53-45
