Marquette Redmen Boys Basketball Advances to District Final with 57-48 Win over Traverse City West on 103 WFXD

Traverse City, MI – March 25, 2021 – The Marquette Redmen Boys Basketball traveled to Traverse City to take on the Traverse City West Titans in the District Semifinals! Marquette gutted out a 57-48 road win to move on to the District Finals this Saturday, which they will host. Jacob Ogea had the call live from Traverse City West High School on 103 WFXD.
1st Half:

The Redmen got off to a hot start with a basket from Ty Lotterman, but Jonathon O’Connor nailed a 3 for the Titans to give TC West an early 3-2 lead. Both teams started trading baskets, and two scores from Kameron Karp gave Marquette a one-point lead. Marquette got more offense in the first with another basket from Karp and a 3-point shot from David Eberhard. Trailing 11-9, Patrick O’Connor went on a personal 5-0 run to end the quarter for Traverse City West. The Titans led 14-11 over Marquette at the end of the first quarter.

TC West came out strong to begin the second quarter, and expanded their lead up to 18-13. Marquette battled back with four straight points from Jordan DeMay, and the deficit was down to one. Luke Robertson responded with a 3-pointer for Traverse City West, but then the Redmen countered with a 7-0 run led by Karp and DeMay. Late in the half, Eberhard buried another 3-point shot but Jonathon O’Connor made a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer. At halftime, the Redmen led 27-26 in a tight game.

2nd Half:

Marquette’s senior back-court of Karp and Lincoln Sager took over for the Redmen in the second half. Both were on fire to begin the third, and Marquette jumped out to a 39-32 lead after five straight points from Sager. The Redmen defense held up too, only holding TC West to six points in the third quarter. Marquette took that seven-point lead into the fourth quarter of play.

Marquette played tough defense all night long.
The run bled into the fourth for Marquette, and the Redmen jumped out to a 13-point lead. TC West picked up its offense in the fourth, but the Redmen had an answer every time. Marquette led by nine with under three minutes left, and three points from the Titans’ Josh Hirschenberger cut their deficit to only six and made things interesting. Lotterman and Hirschenberger traded baskets, but the Redmen still held an eight-point lead. Time ran out on the Titans, and Marquette made its free throws down the stretch. The Redmen won 57-48 on the road to advance to the District Finals on Saturday. Karp led Marquette with 17 points, and Sager added 16 for Marquette.
