Sault Ste Marie – February 15, 2021 – The Marquette Redettes traveled to the east end of the U.P. for a varsity basketball match-up against the Blue Devils of Sault Ste Marie. This game is kicking off a 3-game week for The Redettes on the road against the Sault Ste. First Half: The first quarter started out slow for both teams. A rather low scoring quarter started off with Lilly Alaspa draining a 3-pointer to put the Blue Devils up 3-0. After a Marquette foul, Claire Erickson was sent to the free throw stripe and capitalized by landing both shots building the lead to, 5-0. The Soo was strong under the basket with plenty of second chance shots, but couldn’t capitalize on a majority of them.
Rayna Warchock kicked things off for the Redettes in the second quarter by landing one of her signature 3-point shots tying up the game, 7-7. Both team’s defenses were playing strong against one another, but each team was a little sloppy on the offensive side of the ball. Marquette was able to string together some buckets and eventually take their first lead, 11-7. It didn’t last for long however with Lilly Alaspa taking back the lead for the Blue Devils with a put-back bucket. The Soo added to their lead to close out the first half with a 3-point shot by Mackenzie Bell bringing the score to, 16-11 at the half.

The Redettes strung together a 9-0 run started by a Brooklyn Michelin 3-point basket. Maria Millado was able to lay up the ball off the glass to tie up the ball game 20-18. The play continued to be back and forth and the Redettes were able to keep it a one possession game. In the closing seconds of the quarter the Blue Devils in-bounded the ball to Lilly Alaspa who put it up as time expired with a foul. She cashed in on the 3-point play and ended the quarter in favor of the Blue Devils, 27-24.

The fourth and final quarter kept with the current back and forth theme. The Soo however took a seven point lead early on with help from a Haleigh Knowels shot from behind the arc. Millado and the Redettes were able to fight back to come within two, 33-31. Sault Ste Marie then went on quite a run allowing only a pair of Kaleah Puskala free throws, and putting together a series of scores for themselves. The Blue Devils kept up the great defense and extended their winning streak to 21 games sending the Redettes back home with a loss.
Final: 44-33
Top Scorers: Lilly Alaspa 11pts, Sault Ste. Marie.
