Marquette Dominates Sault Ste Marie on Homecoming

Marquette, MISeptember 22, 2023 – The Marquette Senior High School Football Team fed off a tremendous homecoming crowd’s energy for a dominating performance Friday night, defeating Sault Ste Marie 28-7.

After the two teams battled most of the first half to a 7-7 stalemate, Marquette needed just one play to shift momentum and take control of the game. Facing a long 4th down and backed up deep into their own territory, the Blue Devils lined up to punt it away. But Jan Van den Ende came screaming off the left edge, blocked the kick, and gave the ball to Marquette at the Soo 2-yard line with 11 seconds left in the first half. The next play, quarterback Jaxon Jurmu found Jacob MacPhee in the end zone to go up 7 just before the break. It was all Marquette needed.

In the 2nd half Marquette held the Soo offense to just three first downs, and then added a couple of extra touchdowns from Tucker Welch as insurance to bring home the 28-7 victory.

Marquette moves to 2-2 on the season and 2-1 on the Big North Conference. They travel to Escanaba this Friday night.
