Marquette, MIMay 21st, 2019 – Broadcaster Luke Ghiardi said it best, “everyone is dreaming of summer”, as the Marquette Redettes faced the Bark River Harris Broncos on the softball diamond. Being the home team, the Marquette Redettes took the field for defense at the top of the first inning knowing it would set the tone for the rest of the game. Amanda McIntire started in the circle for Marquette, and the Broncos started off with a quick single. Bark River gave up their first out on an easy fly ball, but a past ball on the next pitch moved the runner to second. McIntire was doing well early in the game for Marquette, staying ahead in the pitch count for the top of the order. The runner advanced to third base on another tough ball in the dirt, but the third batter fell to strikes for out number two. Bark River tagged their first run at home on a wild pitch after a close play at the plate. McIntire recorded her second strikeout of the game to end the side. For the Redettes turn at bat, the first hitter was retired, but a wicked ground ball put Warchock on first. Some heads-up base running from Warchock allowed her to easily steal second when the infield got lazy. Marquette tied the score at 1-1 after an RBI double from Sofia van den Ende allowed Warchock to tag home plate. Another single from the Redettes put runners in scoring position, however a smart defensive play gave Bark River their second out after tagging a runner going for home. Bark River got out of the jam thanks to some fine pitching, retiring the third out on strikes to end the inning at 2-1.

Amanda McIntire quickly put the first out of the second inning in the books after several quick strikes for the Marquette Redettes, her rising fastball being her main weapon. McIntire continued to throw fire from the circle and put the second out of the inning away with another strike out. The game slowed down for just a moment after a Broncos batter made it to first on a walk, but she ended the side with her fifth strike out of the game. The Redettes’ pitcher looked to help her own cause and started the bottom of the inning in the batter’s box, but she popped out to the second baseman for out number one. A ground ball hit directly back at the pitcher was out number two, but the designed player, Stephanie Spehalski earned first base on a walk. With the top of the order up, Jordan Hanes stepped in but ripped a ground ball to the infield for out number three.

The first out of inning number three was put in the books when Bark River hit a soft ground ball to the Marquette Redettes’ first baseman, Madison Carter, who made the unassisted tag. McIntire seemed to lose a bit of control when she walked the second batter of the inning, but Zoe Kurian got under a short fly ball for out number two for the next hitter. Marquette ended their turn on the diamond when the Broncos’ runner tried to steal second but eventually ended up getting caught in a pickle for out number three. Warchock got her second single of the game to lead off the Redettes’ side, and she also recorded her second stolen base just a few pitches later. A past ball moved Warchock down to third base, and she scored when van den Ende got her second RBI single of the game to make the score 3-1 for Marquette. A hit and run play sacrificed an out from Marquette, but they moved their runner into better scoring position at second. Maiya King crushed a double to the outfield fence to score van den Ende and bring Marquette’s lead to 4-1. Madison Carter went down on strikes after a questionable final strike was called, but Bark River wasn’t out of danger yet with a runner on third. The Broncos escaped the inning when they got the third out after a great catch on a fly ball.

Two really quick strike-outs were put away by McIntire, as she seemed to have settled down to start the fourth, and the game continued to just fly thanks to her incredible pitching. She again stuck out side with her eighth solo put away, ending any of Bark River’s scoring hopes. Zoe Kurian was first up for the Marquette Redettes, and she fell to strikes after a big battle at the plate. Jordan Hanes smacked a really nice ground ball down the line to put a runner on first with two away. Unfortunately, Hanes was stranded at first base after the final batter of the inning went down to strikes.

Beginning the top of the fifth inning strong, Amanda McIntire quickly got ahead of the Broncos’ first batter in the count and used that to her advantage for her ninth strike out of the game and out number one. Strike out number ten went into the books for McIntire on the very next batter, and the Broncos seemed to be unable to even put a bat on a ball thrown from the circle. McIntire was untouchable, and retired her third side on strike outs to end the top of the fifth. A lead off single for Sophia van den Ende, her third single of the game, put another insurance runner on first base with only three outs left for Bark River. Unfortunately, a double play quickly put two outs in the books against the Marquette Redettes and removed all their base runners. Maiya King continued to destroy the ball at the plate when she ripped a ground ball single to the outfield for another base runner. The final out of the inning was a big fly ball that the Bark River Harris’ center fielder managed to get under.

The innings kept flying by, and the first out of the top of the sixth inning (the first non-strike out recorded for two entire innings) for the Marquette Redettes was put down when Maiya King wrangled a ground ball at third and tossed to first. The Broncos attempted to shake things up with an attempted bunt with nobody on base, but their batter was easily thrown out at first. The Bark River Harris Broncos were down to their very last out of the inning, but Amanda McIntre kept throwing heat and recorded another strike out. Two quick outs went against the Redettes, but an easy pop up put a speedy end to the sixth inning.

Down to their final three outs, the Bark River Harris Broncos appeared desperate in their dugout after their dominating performance at Superior Central. Gabby Swajanen fielded two balls hit directly to her for two immediate outs, and fittingly, Amanda McIntire got the final out of the game on an infield fly ball, giving the Marquette Redettes the 4-1 win.
