1Q: Jonas Bicik won the tip for the Redmen to begin the game, but the opening possession came up empty, as Westwood got the scoring going on their opening offensive look. Bicik eventually got the Redmen on the board with a nice step back triple to take the one point lead. Bicik scored fifteen in the first quarter just a night ago against the Hematites, as he was looking for another great start. The Patriots began to roll thanks to Garret Sundberg and his two triples, the Redmen couldn’t find an answer as Marcus Boase connected on a deep two to take a 10-3 lead. Jordan DeMay ended the Patriot run as he had a chance at an old fashion three point play, but couldn’t knock down the free throw. The Patriots led 14-9 after one quarter of play, led by Garret Sundberg’s eight points.
2Q: The Redmen started the quarter with possession, but once again came up short. The Patriots capitalized on their first offensive go, as Zack Beckman scored his first points of the ball game. Marquette continued to struggle offensively, but thanks to Westwood forcing shots in the early minutes of the quarter, the Redmen were given opportunities to cut the deficit. Jonas Bicik was the main man in the quarter comeback, thanks to an old fashion three point play to cut the deficit to four. A back and forth affair ended the first half with a 25-21 lead for the Westwood Patriots.
3Q: Marquette continued to come up empty on their first offensive possession of the quarter, as they played poorly for the opening two minutes. Westwood also had their struggles early, so the lead was only extended to six with 5:20 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Jonas Bicik ended the offensive struggles for Marquette with two free throws after a great physical play inside. Garret Sundberg knocked down his fourth triple of the night to take a seven point lead, but it was dwindled down to five from a Jordan DeMay layup on the very next possession, both teams started to get hot offensively. The Redmen cut the deficit to just two points before the end of the quarter, but Zack Beckman buried a triple at the buzzer to take a 37-32 lead heading into the final quarter of regulation.
4Q: With the five point lead, the Westwood Patriots knocked down another triple to start the quarter on their first offensive possession. The Redmen turned the ball over and the Patriots quickly took a ten point lead on the other end. The turnovers would drown the Redmen midway through the quarter as they had several defensive stops but just couldn’t take care of the basketball. The Patriots held a 42-34 lead with just under 2:30 remaining in the ball game. Jordan DeMay had a chance at two free throws a few possessions later, as both free throws were no good, Eberhard got the rebound back but quickly turned the ball over. After a getting a defensive stop on the other end, the Redmen turned the ball over once again on their next offensive possession. After missed free throws from Westwood, Jordan DeMay knocked down two of his own to cut the deficit to six. The Redmen ran out of time as Westwood knocked down their free throws down the stretch, and after only scoring four points in the final quarter, Marquette fell 47-36.
Garret Sundberg won the Player of the Game
Final: Marquette 36 Westwood 47
