Marquette Redmen Fall Short, Lose 49-37 to the Escanaba Eskymos on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9
- Updated: February 10, 2022

Marquette, MI – February 10th, 2022 – The Marquette Redmen hosted the Escanaba Eskymos in a crucial match up. They lose the game 49-37 and drop to 5-7 on the season, 2-3 for GNC play. With their top scorer out due to illness, Marquette could not generate enough offensive consistency to compete against the Eskymos. Luke Ghiardi had the call live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!

Marquette Redmen warm up before the game
1st Quarter: Escanaba strikes the first blow when Casey Bray dribbles into the lane and makes the shot off the glass. Marquette would answer immediately with Jordan DeMay driving to the paint for a tough layup, making the shot and drawing a foul.
Escanaba showed early why they would be a tough team to beat. The Eskymos would force a few turnovers to keep Marquette out of the scoring column and start the game with a 9-2 lead over the Redmen in the games first 6 minutes. With under a minute left, Easton Clements makes a contested jump shot to cut the lead to 5. Escanaba would score the quarters final points when they drive into the lane for an easy layup.
End of 1st: Marquette 4, Escanaba 11
2nd Quarter: Marquette would step up their defensive pressure causing turnovers and fast break opportunities for the Redmen. David Eberhard would bring the game within 3 points by driving into the lane and making a layup in traffic. Escanaba’s Jared Hanson would cut the pressure by shooting a 3-pointer and give the Eskymos a 6 point lead. Marquette’s offense simply could not get going as they had only 8 points with only 2 minutes left in the game’s 2nd quarter.
Escanaba looked to get the momentum they had in the first quarter by going on an 8-0 run and doubling up the Redmen 19-8 with under 1 minute to go. John Weber would put the Redmen on his shoulders in the final minute by hitting two 3-pointers, cutting the lead to 5, and getting Marquette back in the game. Escanaba would close the first half on a pair of bonus free throws.
End of 2nd: Marquette 14, Escanaba 21

Redmen and Eskymos huddle up for a timeout called
3rd Quarter: Escanaba would again take advantage to start the third quarter. Eskymo Trevor Brown drives down the sideline and cuts in, making the shot off the glass. Escanaba goes on a 7-0 run in the quarters first 4 minutes. Under 3 minutes to play in the 3rd quarter, Marquette’s DeMay hits a big 3-pointer to stop the bleeding for Marquette and give the Redmen their first points of the period. Eberhard would also get in on the 3-point action by sinking the long shot with 90 seconds to go and cutting the Eskymo lead down to 8 points. Hanson would remove any wind in Marquette’s sails as he would answer with a 3-pointer of his own and get the Escanaba lead back up to double digits.
End of 3rd: Marquette 25, Escanaba 35
4th Quarter: Escanaba opens the scoring with Hudson shooting a jumper and making the shot. Justin Jurmu would get his first points of the night by cutting backdoor in the paint, pump faking a defender right by him for the easy put in. Wyatt Lakenen would end Marquette’s night on a high note with back to back 3-pointers made. Escanaba would run the score up in the closing minutes of the game as they get their lead as high as 16 points.
Turnovers would ultimately be the main limiting factor for Marquette. Moving screens and errant passes would be a theme for the Redmen and could not get their offense going with any consistency. It is worth noting, Marquette did not have their leading scoring, Jonas Bicik (17.4 ppg), due to illness.
End of Game: Marquette 37, Escanaba 49
The Joe Boogren Player of the Game was awarded to Eskymo Connor Smales with 9 points scored in the third quarter alone.
Next Game: The Marquette Redmen will host the Kingsford Flivvers tomorrow February 10th, with a scheduled tip off at 7:30pm. Luke Ghiardi will have the call live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!
