Marquette Redmen Defeat the Gladstone Braves, Win 59-47 on FSM 105.1-99.9!

Gladstone, MIFebruary 8th, 2022 – The Marquette Redmen hit the road in tonight’s clash against the Gladstone Braves. They beat the Braves 59-47 and improve their record to 5-6 (GNC 2-2) on the season. Luke Ghiardi had the call live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!

1st Quarter: Marquette’s David Eberhard opened the game by scoring an easy layup right from the tip-off. Both teams would go back and forth throughout the first period with the Braves’ Kaden Gibbs evening the score with an offensive rebound and jump shot. Redmen, Jonas Bicik, drives hard into the paint, makes the shot while getting a foul called. Elliot Vitito hits a 3 pointer to take a 5-4 lead for Gladstone. Eberhard hustles for an offensive rebound and draws a shooting foul from under the paint. Marquette retakes the lead after the 2 made free throws. The Gladstone Braves would tie the game with Drake Johnson picking up an offensive rebound and putting it in the basket. The Redmen would again take the lead when Bicik made a nice pump fake, sending a Braves defender flying and drives up to the basket for the layup. The Braves would go on to take a 2 point lead into the second quarter.

End of 1st: Marquette 10, Gladstone 12

2nd Quarter: Redmen John Weber opens scoring with a 3-pointer giving Marquette a 1 point lead. Bicik extends the lead by driving between 2 defenders and making a jump shot form the free throw shoulder. Both offenses would answer each other as neither the Braves or Redmen let any momentum get out of hand. Easton Clements would again give the Redmen the lead when he would rebound his own missed shot and put it in to make it 19-17 with under 2 minutes left. Jack Quinnell would also capitalize on an offensive rebound and put it in of a left hand roll giving Marquette a 4 point lead. The first half end with Marquette having their biggest lead of the night.

End of 2nd: Marquette 21, Gladstone 17

3rd Quarter: Marquette’s Bicik gets the second half’s first points by driving into the paint off an inbound pass and making a tough layup in traffic. Jordan DeMay gets a crucial steal and pushes the fast break to the rim and makes the layup, giving Marquette some much needed momentum. Marquette would look like a different team as Axel Vermaat drives into the lane, makes the shot and draws a shooting foul for a 3-point play. The Redmen would end up going on a 17-0 run for the entire 3rd quarter to give Marquette a 21-point lead heading into the 4th quarter. The Braves would have to answer immediately as Marquette has the win in sight.

End of 3rd: Marquette 38, Gladstone 17

4th Quarter: With the game in Marquette’s control, they looked to get their 5th win of the season. Gladstone would not go without a fight however. The Braves gained more of the spark they had in the first 2 quarters as they outscore the Redmen 14-4 in the quarters first 3 minutes and cutting the lead down to 11 points. Eberhard took over for the Redmen in the last period to keep the Marquette lead intact and with some breathing room. Foul trouble would ultimately be the Braves downfall as the Redmen would slow everything down and force Gladstone to start playing more aggressively, fouling along the way. Redmen Logan Peterson would get on the scoring sheet when he drives into the lane, drawing a foul, and making a tough layup, completing the 3 point play. The Redmen close the game out 59-47, secure their 5th win of the season and even out their GNC record to 2-2.

The Joe Boogren Player of the Game was awarded to David Eberhard scoring 17 points in the game.
