Marquette Redettes Lackluster Performance, Lose 38-27 on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9

Menominee, MIFebruary 9th, 2022 – The Marquette Redettes traveled to Menominee to take on the Maroons. The Redettes fall short 38-27 in a low scoring affair and drop to 7-10 on the season. With a tough loss to swallow, Marquette still are in prime position to take the GNC. Travis Nelson made the call live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!

1st Quarter: Marquette Redettes opened the game up when Zoe Smith sinks a 3-pointer from the corner. Anna Nerat would tie the game for the Maroons when she hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Menominee’s Nerat would again hit another 3 pointer with 4 minutes left in the first quarter to take the lead 6-3.  The Maroons’ Rylee Doyle would make a tough shot in the paint to get on the score sheet.

Menominee would make it a 10-0 run when Anna Axtell gets her own offensive rebound and put it back in the basket. Cora Anderson would stop the run when she makes a quick jump shot off a loose ball, cutting the score 10-5.

2nd Quarter: Meghan McPhee starts off the second quarter by cleaning up an offensive board and making it back in. Menominee’s Jetta Bayerl drives past a Marquette defender to make a layup and continue their offensive attack. Sienna Lingle would make a crucial steal on the defensive side, taking the ball coast to coast for an easy layup and a much needed score for the Redettes.

With under 4 minutes left, Menominee gets a technical called for having too many players on the court, Zoe Smith sinking both free throws and cutting the Maroons lead to 2 points. Kennedy Olsen’s hits a clutch 3-pointer for Menominee giving them a 16-11 lead. With under 10 seconds to play, Marquette turns the ball over giving Nerat enough time to shoot the ball a few feet from the 3-point line to make a buzzer beater and give Menominee an 8-point lead heading into the second half.

3rd Quarter: Menominee continues their offensive domination with a easy backdoor pass under the paint and made shot. Marquette’s Lingle would answer immediately by driving into the lane and making a tough layup in traffic. After a Marquette shooting foul, Maroons’ Nerat makes it a double digit lead with a pair of made free throws. Marquette’s McPhee hoped to claw their way back into the game by cutting in the paint and making a shot, cutting the lead down to 9. Ella Jezewski gets on the score sheet by making a nice drive into the paint and making the shot.

The Redettes now stared at a 7 point deficit with some momentum going their way. Axtell from the Maroons would quickly deflate any wind in Marquette’s sails by sinking a 3-pointer, getting Menominee back up by double digits under under 3 minutes to go in the quarter. Anderson would add to her points on the night by making a backdoor cut to the paint and making the easy shot under the paint. Julia Ott makes a big steal for the Redettes and makes a jump shot off the fast break to cut the game down to 28-22. With under 30 seconds left in the third quarter, Menominee again would steal the ball, drive down into the paint and score taking a 30-22 lead into the last period.

4th Quarter: An unfortunate series of events unfolded in the opening moments of the quarter as Marquette’s Maria Millado gets 3 fouls called in 25 seconds, putting Menominee in the bonus for the remainder of the game. After 3 minutes of scoreless action, Marquette ends the drought with Smith making 1/2 free throws and cutting into the lead 30-23.

Menominee would control the game on offense and defense for the rest of the quarter as Axtell, Nerat, Doyle make crushing shots to remove any morale from the Redettes. Menominee closes the game out with ease and hands Marquette a heartbreaking loss.

The Joe Boogren Player of the Game was awarded to Cora Anderson scoring 6 points off the bench.
