Marquette Loses 77-86 In Triple Overtime Thriller to Menominee on FSM/WFXD

Marquette, MI – February 4th, 2022 – The Marquette Redmen Basketball team dropped to 1-2 in the GNC standings after a triple-overtime loss 77-86 to the Maroons. Luke Ghiardi had the call live from Marquette on FSM 105.1-99.9 and WFXD 103.3.

Marquette warms up prior to tip-off
1st Quarter: The action got started with the home team Redmen winning the tip. Jonas Bicik was the first to strike in this matchup and Marquette took the quick 2-0 lead. The Maroons would answer as Brady Schultz hit a shot from beyond the arc. Menominee would get yet another bucket, the Redmen now found themselves down 2-5. The threes continued to fall as Justin Jurmu of Marquette would bank a three, tying up the game. Jurmu would continue to have a strong game as with 3:57 left in the quarter he would give the Redmen the lead back, the score was now 9-8. John Weber would get his first shot of the night and that shot would be a three, Marquette led 12-8. The deficit for Menominee continued to get bigger as now the Redmen led 14-8 after a Jurmu two-point bucket. To end scoring for the first quarter, Menominee would get a two-point bucket and Cooper Conway hit two free throws.

Marquette takes on the Maroons
End of 1st: Marquette 14, Menominee 12
2nd Quarter: To start the second quarter off Cooper Conway would tie the ball game up 14-14. Jurmu would enter double-digit scoring when he hit a three, Marquette led by 3. Bicik would cut and get the close shot to go. Brady Schultz answered with his second three of the game, cutting Marquette’s lead down to 19-17. Wyatt Lakenen would come off the bench and his impact was instantly felt when he hit a three. There would be a short scoring drought for both teams but Brady Badker would end the drought with a two-point basket, Menominee trailed 21-22. Bicik would answer but Connor Coduti would answer right back with a three, tying the game back up 24-24. Eli Beal would snag the lead for the Maroons with a basket of his own, the score was 26-24. To end the first half of play Bicik would get a buzzer-beater layup to give Marquette the lead.
End of 2nd: Marquette 28, Menominee 26

3rd Quarter: The lead would jump to 30-26 when David Eberhard got the first points of the second half. Bicik would get his 10th point of the night when he got the ball to go through the hoop. With a Jordan Demay basket, the Redmen all of a sudden found themselves up 34-26. Aidan Bellisle wouldn’t allow the score to remain as he hit a three, cutting the lead down to 34-29. Bellisle would find his stride from downtown as he would hit another three. Demay would pick up his second foul and Schultz would head to the free-throw line and go 1/2. Marquette found themselves with a 36-34 lead but that would become a 36-37 deficit when Brody Waara hit a three. Bicik would get fouled and on his trip to the charity stripe, he would go a perfect 2/2. Demay would hit a beyond the arc three and the Redmen led 41-37. Jack Quinnell would send the Redmen into the fourth quarter with a lead as he scored a two-point basket.
End of 3rd: Marquette 41, Menominee 37

Marquette does battle in the third quarter
4th Quarter: David Eberhard would find himself at the free-throw line and he would hit both shots. Axel Vermaat would extend the lead to 47-41 when he got a layup to find its way in the basket. With 4:24 left in the game Bicik would go shoot free throws but only go 1/2. Marquette led 48-43 and Bellisle would have a chance to cut the lead with a 1 and 1 free throw trip but he would miss. The lead got trimmed down to 46-48 when Brody Waara hit a three. Marquette would turn the ball over and the Maroons would capitalize and tie the game up. Eberhard continued to find his way to the charity stripe as he would go 2/2 and give his squad the 50-48 lead. With 1:30 left in the quarter, a Schultz made free throw and Waara’s two-point shot would end up with the Maroons leading 51-50. Bellisle would get fouled and head to the line but only make one free throw. Eberhard would hit a quick layup and send this already thriller of a game to overtime.
End of 4th: Marquette 52, Menominee 52

1st Overtime: Marquette would force a turnover and take the lead when Jonas Bicik hit 2/2 free throws after being fouled by Batker. The Redmen would turn the ball over which resulted in a Brady Schultz basket, tying the game up 54-54. Jordan Demay would break the tie with a basket, giving Marquette the 58-56 lead. Eberhard gave the Redmen a four-point lead when he scored, victory was in sight for Marquette. Bicik would commit a foul on Bellisle, Bellisle would make Marquette pay with two made free throws. With 13 seconds left the Redmen would turn the ball over and their three-point lead would vanish when Aidan Bellisle hit a three from the volleyball line to send the game to a second overtime.
End of 1st Overtime: Marquette 59, Menominee 59
2nd Overtime: With 3:49 left in the second overtime Bicik would give Marquette a 61-59 lead with a basket. The game only continued to heat up when Conway would tie the game up 61-61 with a two-point bucket. Bicik continued to have a night of nights when he would score yet again. With 2:30 to go Bicik was fouled and he would go to the line and wasn’t fazed by the pressure as he would hit both shots. Marquette’s 65-61 lead was cut to 65-63 after a Conway left-handed basket. With 27 seconds left, Marquette found themselves up five points. Conway would hit an NBA range three with 15 seconds left, bringing the Maroons within two. Bellisle would get his fifth and final foul when he fouled Eberhard. Eberhard went to the line to seal the game and went 1/2. Menominee didn’t have much time but they somehow made it work as Conway hit a three to force yet another overtime.
End of 2nd Overtime: Marquette 71, Menominee 71
Third Overtime: The Maroons came out with no remorse as Coduti hit a quick three. Marquette would turn over the ball but lucky for them Menominee wouldn’t be able to capitalize. Vermaat would foul out when he was called for a blocking foul, John Weber would sub in. Menominee was up four when Marquette turned the ball over and Eli Beal would pile on the lead with two made free throws. Bicik would lose the ball and all momentum was officially with the Maroons when Schultz dunked on a fastbreak. With 1:40 left Demay would hit a three, bringing the Redmen within five 74-79. Waara would get a basket to go, extending the lead to 81-74. Trevor Theuerkauf would get fouled and make Marquette pay as he made both free throws. Eberhard kept the Redmen alive with a three-ball from downtown. Beal would be fouled by Eberhard and Bicik would get called for a technical foul after slamming the ball. Waara would hit 3/4 of the free throws.
Final Score: Marquette 77, Menominee 86
