Marquette Begins New Conference Era With a Bang

Marquette, MISeptember 1, 2023 – The Marquette Senior High School Football Team began a new era last night at Hart Stadium in Marquette. Marquette welcomed in the Alpena Wildcats as a Big North Conference game for the first time ever. Marquette showed what they’ll be bringing to the Big North with a resounding 49-0 victory over the Wildcats.

Marquette wasted no time getting the fireworks going as they marched 65 yards in 5 plays for the opening score when Tucker Welch took the give from Jaxon Jurmu found some space and made a great cut to the outside to take it 34 yards for the score. On the ensuing possession Alpena moved the ball into Marquette territory but going for the home run, Alpena quarterback Jacob Zann lofted one down the sideline and Marquette safety Wyatt Lakenen made a great play on the ball and came down with an interception, stopping the Wildcats cold in their tracks.

Marquette proved the opening drive was no fluke needing just four plays to go 95 yards (aided by some Alpena penalties). Jaxon Jurmu hit Wyatt Lakenen on a bubble screen, Jan Van den Ende through a great blcok and Lakenen did the rest, taking it 31 yards to the house allowing Marquette to take a 14-0 lead into the 2nd quarter.

After a forced turnover by Marquette and not being able to do anything with it, Marquette forced another Alpena turnover on the next possession, with Jacob MacPhee recovering a Wildcat fumble. Starting on the Alpena 45 yard line, Marquette moved the football deep into Wildcat territory, and on 2nd and goal from the 8, quarterback Jaxon Jurmu hit junior receiver Kyler Sager on a slant into the end zone to put Marquette up 21-0 heading into halftime.

It was all Marquette in the second half too. After forcing a three and out on Alpena’s opening possession, Marquette got the ball on the Wildcat 42. After a big play on first down to push it to the Wildcat 25, a couple incompletions and costly penalties backed Marquette up to 4th and long. Jurmu dropped back and lofted one down the sidelines as Sager went over the top of Eli Chism and came down with the ball as he backed into the end zone for the 32 yard score, putting the nail in the coffin of Alpena.

Marquette would add three more scores, all on QB runs. One of 60 from Jurmu, and rushes of 21 and 24 yards from backup quarterback Ford Richardson.

Marquette held the Wildcats to just 176 total yards and pitched the first shutout the program has seen since 2020.

Jurmu finished his day 11-5 for 167 yards and three touchdowns. Wyatt Lakenen brought in 5 balls for 85 yards and a score. Both of Sager’s receptions went for scores for a combined 40 yards. Running back Tucker Welch added 16 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Marquette will travel to Gaylord on Saturday, September 9th.
