Maroons Defeat Redmen In Low Scoring Affair
- Updated: February 25, 2022

Menominee, MI – February 25th, 2022 – The Marquette Redmen boys basketball team hit the road this afternoon to take on the Menominee Maroons. The game was broadcasted on 105.1-99.9. The last match up between these two schools went into three overtime periods, resulting in a 86-77 loss for the Redmen.
1Q: Both teams started the ball game cold, as after a winning tip by the Maroons, no scores came until the 5:45 mark when it was the Marquette Redmen and Jonas Bicik taking a 2-0 lead. The Maroons had opportunities at the free throw line early on, but went two for five on their first five attempts. With just under 4:00 to play in the opening quarter, it was a tied 4-4. The play of the quarter for the Redmen came from Jordan DeMay as he chased down a Maroon and blocked a wide open layup, unfortunately for Marquette, Menominee went on to score seven straight points. After a sloppy start to the ball game, the Redmen trailed 15-8 heading into the second quarter.

2Q: The sloppiness continued to open the quarter as the Redmen turned the ball over on their first three possessions, thankfully the Maroons also started the quarter cold. The first points of the quarter came with 4:04 remaining in the half as it was Justin Jurmu cutting into the deficit for the Redmen. Two more points followed as Wyatt Lakenen made a nice move inside. Menominee finally found the bottom of the net as they led 17-12 with just under 2:00 to play in the first half. A turnover filled first half was the story for the Redmen, but they were very lucky to only be trailing by six heading into the locker room. It was Menominee 18 Marquette 12 at the end of two.

3Q: The Redmen started the third quarter with the basketball, as they were unable to cut into the deficit. Menominee on the other hand, started the quarter with a triple and forced another turnover that led to an uncontested layup. The Maroons quickly led 23-12. Jordan DeMay started the scoring off for the Redmen, as he ended a 7-0 run for Menominee. With just under 4:30 remaining in the third quarter, it was the Maroons leading 27-14. The Redmen were only able to put up two more points in what was a slow moving third quarter, after three quarters of play, Menominee led 28-16.
4Q: Both teams came out quick to begin the fourth quarter, as they both found buckets but Menominee would gain the edge after another three pointer was buried. Wyatt Lakenen connected on a triple for the Redmen, but the Maroons answered with another of their own. Menominee led 36-21 with just under 6:00 to play in the ball game. A crucial few minutes for the Redmen didn’t solve anything, as they couldn’t find the bottom of the net. Menominee did a wonderful job at running clock and also finding the open man. Being able to waste clock and score on possessions is key to being able to close out games, and that’s exactly what the Maroons did. After a low scoring affair, the Maroons defeated the Redmen 51-32.
Final: Marquette 32 Menominee 51
The Redmen will continue regular season play next week, as they host the Gladstone Braves on Monday. The ball will tip at 7 pm as you can hear the broadcast on 105.1 – 99.9.
