Marquette, MI – June 6th, 2026 – Four teams traveled to Kingsford High School the last week of May with one goal in mind: bringing home a U.P. championship. Defending champion West Iron County entered the tournament looking to secure its third straight title, while Ishpeming, Iron Mountain, and Gwinn hoped to dethrone the Wykons and claim the crown for themselves.
The day brought an added obstacle as rain forced a nearly 45-minute delay, sending players and coaches off the courts before action eventually resumed. Once play restarted, the race for both team and individual championships picked up right where it left off.
With only four schools competing, every flight automatically advanced to the semifinal round. In several brackets, smaller participation numbers created first-round byes, meaning some competitors stood just one victory away from earning a U.P. title.
Final Team Standings
West Iron County — 46 points (U.P. Champions)
Ishpeming — 28 points
Iron Mountain — 20 points
Gwinn — 12 points
No. 1 Singles
The top singles bracket produced some of the day’s most competitive tennis. West Iron County’s Dominic Brunswick opened with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 semifinal victory over Gwinn’s Mason Kovarik to earn a spot in the championship match.
On the opposite side of the bracket, Ishpeming’s Kole Bancroft battled Iron Mountain’s Malakai Broesrsma in a tightly contested semifinal. Bancroft pushed the Mountaineer throughout the match, but Broesrsma escaped with a 7-6, 6-4 victory.
The final delivered plenty of drama. Brunswick edged out the opening set in a tiebreak, 7-6, before Broesrsma answered with a 6-3 second-set win to force a deciding third set. With the championship on the line, Brunswick found another gear, cruising to a 6-1 victory to capture the No. 1 singles title by scores of 7-6, 3-6, 6-1.
