Marquette, MI – December 8th, 2025 – Tomorrow will feature two matchups between Marquette and Negaunee. The girls will get the action started at 6:00 p.m., with the boys action to follow around 7:30 p.m. The Victors Cup will be on the line during the second game.
Last season, the Negaunee girls eventually finished the regular season unbeaten before falling short against Gladstone in the District 33 Championship (50-47). Marquette didn’t quite see the same success finishing with a 11-14 regular season record before also coming up short in the District 1 Championship against Traverse City Central (44-41).
Both teams will have a new look this season after losing multiple seniors who played key roles. For Marquette, they lost Brianna Anderson (Michigan tech), Aubree Blackburn, Payton Pleaugh, and Claire Maskart. On the other side, Negaunee lost Aubrey Johnson (Michigan Tech), Madison Pekrul, and Macyn DellAngelo. The girls’ action gets underway at 6:00 P.M. at Barb Crill Gymnasium.
Last season for the boys, the first game getting ugly in favor of the Sentinels (71-28), but the second game would be closer (78-64). In the end, Marquette came away with both wins. The boys season got underway last week, Negaunee won its first contest (54-35) lead by new head coach Billy Hill. Marquette would play twice last week finishing 1-1, taking down Gladstone (60-57) before dropping the home opener to Coopersville (60-49).
Each teams saw great success last season beginning with the Sentinels who won their first district championship in four seasons, with an overall record of 22-4. The Miners also reached a district championship although they were defeated by Kingsford (58-31), resulting in a 15-9 overall record.
This year’s teams look much different for both squads, each losing a lot of key seniors. Marquette sent multiple players off to play in college while losing a handful of other role players; Jacob Macphee (Michigan Tech), Jaxon Jurmu (Alma), Kyler Sager (Bay), Max Lackey, Henry Wood, Parker Saunders, Zachary Leonard, and Michael Cattoor. Negaunee lost almost as many; Ty Jacobson, Jordan Guenette (North Central Michigan), Holden Meyer, Baron Heslip, Ian Engstrom, and Brady Mager. Marquette will look to keep the Victors Cups at home when they put it on the line tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Barb Crill Gymnasium.
