Marquette, MI – October 25, 2018 – Friday night marks the start of the MHSAA Football Postseason. There will be a number of Upper Peninsula teams taking the field in hopes that its the start of a run to Ford Field. 3 of those teams’, Ishpeming, Westwood, and West Iron County, head coaches joined the Sports Drive to talk with Mark and Luke about their seasons and first round matchups.
Jeff Olson’s Ishpeming Hematites are 9-0 and back in the playoffs for the first time since 2015. Coach Olson’s team is ready to go as they take on Gwinn at the playgrounds in Ishpeming Friday night at 7:00 PM. You can listen to all the action on our sister station 98.3 WRUP and online at WRUP.com with pregame beginning at 6:30.
Scott Syrjala has the Westwood Patriots back in the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive year. Syrjala’s Patriots finished 7-2, with the only losses coming to the only 2 unbeaten 11-player teams in the U.P., Ishpeming and Calumet, by a combined 10 points. Syrjala believes his Patriot’s are the healthiest they have been since Week 2 and confident heading into Friday.
The West Iron County Wykons came up a game short of Ford Field in 2017, losing in the State Semi-Finals. The Wykons are back in the playoffs after finishing 7-2 on the season and looking to make another run in a very difficult Division 8. Mike Berutti, Wykons head coach, joined Luke and Mark to talk about how this team is different, and similar, to last year’s team.
