Marquette, MI – June 30th, 2026 – This week on the Big Local Sports Show, we were joined by one of the Upper Peninsula’s most accomplished athletes and coaches, Bernie Anderson. A graduate of Ishpeming High School, Anderson excelled in multiple sports before establishing himself as one of the region’s premier wrestlers and later building an impressive coaching career.
During the first segment, Anderson reflected on his upbringing in Ishpeming and the experiences that helped shape both his athletic and coaching journeys. He shared stories from his days on the wrestling mat, discussed the challenges of competing at the highest levels, and recalled some of the moments that helped define his career. Anderson’s accomplishments as an athlete speak for themselves. A four-time NCAA Division II national qualifier at Northern Michigan University from 1975-78, he earned All-America honors in 1976 with a fifth-place finish at the national championships and ranks ninth in program history with 78 career victories. As a four-time letterwinner, his consistency, work ethic and success helped set a standard for future Wildcat wrestlers. The conversation also explored his transition into coaching and the lessons he carried with him throughout a distinguished career.
In the second segment, the discussion shifted to Anderson’s coaching tenures at Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. He provided insight into the challenges, successes, and behind-the-scenes moments that helped shape both programs during his time on the sidelines. Among the many stories he shared was how he helped give current Green Bay Packers head coach, Matt LaFleur, his first full-time coaching opportunity. That’s just one of several fascinating stories from Anderson’s remarkable career that listeners will have to hear for themselves.
A major focus of the interview was Anderson’s upcoming induction into the Ishpeming Hall of Excellence. He spoke about what the honor means to him, the people who influenced his journey and why representing Ishpeming has remained a source of pride throughout his life. To close out the show, Ishpeming Hall of Excellence Chairman, Brian Sarvello, joined us to discuss Anderson’s induction and provide additional details on this year’s Hall of Excellence class. The induction ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. on July 1 at the Ishpeming High School Auditorium.
Next week, we’ll be joined by head football coach at Marquette, Eric Mason, to look back on a successful season that saw several players advance to the next level while previewing what fans can expect from the Sentinels this fall and beyond.
