Marquette, MI – April 30th, 2026 – About three weeks ago, former Michigan Tech women’s basketball head coach, Sam Clayton, stepped down to move closer to family. She accepted a head coaching position at University of Wisconsin–Stout. Following her departure, the Huskies began the search for the program’s 10th head coach.
On Monday, April 20th, the university announced its new leader, Eric Gruber. Gruber’s coaching journey began after his collegiate playing career at North Central College, where he competed in men’s golf. Following his playing days, he transitioned into coaching, beginning his career in women’s basketball as an assistant for two seasons at the same institution.
He then continued to build his resume at the Division III level with a successful stint at Loras College in Iowa, where he was part of a staff that finished 25–4, earned a trip to the Sweet Sixteen, and closed the season ranked No. 7 nationally before the COVID-19 shutdown. From there, Gruber moved to Coe College, serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for two seasons. He later joined the staff at the University of Wisconsin–Parkside for one year, helping the program achieve its highest win total in eight seasons.
Most recently, Gruber spent three seasons at the Division I level with SIU Edwardsville Cougars women’s basketball as an assistant coach. During his tenure, the Cougars significantly improved, tripling their win total, posting their highest win total since the 2017–18 season, and leading the conference in three-pointers made.
Michigan Tech’s Vice President for Athletics & Recreation, Suzanne Sanregret, shared her excitement following the hire:
“We’re excited to welcome Eric and his family to Michigan Tech. He brings several years of experience as a women’s basketball assistant coach, contributing to programs at a variety of levels, while taking on a wide range of responsibilities. Eric understands the legacy of our women’s basketball program, the high expectations of competing for GLIAC and national success, and what it takes to recruit and develop outstanding student-athletes. His strong recruiting connections in Wisconsin and across the Upper Midwest will be a tremendous asset to our program. He values the small-town feel and close-knit community that make our campus special, and we’re confident he will build on our winning tradition by attracting top talent that excels both on the court and in the classroom.”
Yesterday, the university hosted Gruber’s introductory press conference, officially welcoming him to Michigan Tech and giving him an opportunity to speak with members of the media. With a new era now underway, Gruber looks to build on the program’s strong tradition and continue elevating Michigan Tech Huskies women’s basketball in the competitive GLIAC landscape.
