Marquette, MI – December 11th, 2025 – Yesterday, the University of Michigan announced that it has fired head football coach, Sherrone Moore, following an internal investigation into what the school described as an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” Athletic Director Warde Manuel stated, “This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
Moore joined the Wolverines’ staff in 2018 as the tight ends coach. He was promoted in 2021 to co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, and became Michigan’s head coach in 2024 after Jim Harbaugh left to lead the Los Angeles Chargers. In his two seasons as head coach, Moore compiled a 16–8 record, in addition to four wins as the interim coach in 2023.
Later that night, Moore was detained by Saline police during an “investigation of potential charges.” According to law enforcement, officers responded to a report of an assault and arrested a suspect at the scene. Police emphasized that the incident was not random and there was no ongoing threat to the community. Moore was taken to the Washtenaw County Jail pending a review of possible charges.
The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office told ESPN that it likely will not reach a decision today on whether to file criminal charges against the former Michigan coach. ESPN also reported that Moore had been investigated this past fall after a tip was received, but no wrongdoing was found at that time.
Biff Poggi has been named the interim head football coach as the team prepares for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. The squad will travel to Florida to face the Texas Longhorns on December 31st. Poggi previously coached Michigan in two games this season during Moore’s suspension, going 2–0, with a win over Central Michigan (63-3) and Nebraska (30-27).
