Gwinn To Forego Varsity Football Season

GHs VS Iron Mountain

Marquette MI, – August 21th, 2025 – Yesterday, seniors at Gwinn High School received the unfortunate news that they will not have a senior football season due to a lack of upperclassmen. During fall camp, which began last week, twenty-seven players attended, but only two were seniors and six were juniors.

For safety reasons, the school has decided that it would be too dangerous for the underclassmen to compete against the seniors. They expressed regret to the two senior players who won’t have the opportunity to wear the pads one last time. According to Luke Ghiardi, the Gwinn athletic director, the school will still honor these two seniors with a senior night during the final home game. Additionally, they will remain involved in the program, allowing them to bond with and coach the younger players for the future.

The outlook for Gwinn football is promising, as both the middle school program and the Modeltown Express, which includes 5th and 6th graders, are seeing strong participation numbers. Ghiardi mentioned in a previous interview that they plan to return to the traditional two-team format, featuring both J.V. and Varsity teams, next year when they have enough upperclassmen. Gwinn’s season starts next Wednesday at home against Gladstone with a 7:00 pm kickoff.
