Chelsea, MI – January 25, 2024 – The Marquette hockey team started their three-game downstate swing with an 8-3 win over the South Lyon Unified Lions on Thursday afternoon. Marquette got on the board early with a goal from Nash Riipi just 1:15 into the game, and goals from Kyle Moyer and Riipi again made the score 3-0. South Lyon got on the board midway through the period to cut the deficit to 2, but CJ Carter and Tucker Welch added goals of their own to give Marquette a 5-1 lead after the first period.
In the second, Connor Stade found the back of the net just a few minutes into the period, and Moyer added his second shortly thereafter to make the score 7-1 in favor of Marquette. The Lions responded with a goal to make it 7-2. but Caleb Beerman scored late in the frame to send Marquette to the locker room with an 8-2 lead. Only one goal was recorded in the final stanza, when South Lyon captain Gavin Mulcahy fired the puck past Parker Nevenhoven to make the score 8-3. Marquette locked down defensively after that and came away with the win.
