Friday night lights, a nostalgia that hits a thread in almost every breathing American. When someone hears the phrase, Friday night lights, it means only one thing – high school varsity football. Last Friday, August 27th, the 2021 Gwinn Varsity Football took to the field in their home opener against the Bark River – Harris Broncos.
Myself, and my broadcast partner, Jess D, had the opportunity to talk with GHS Head Football Coach, Tabb Lonergan before the home-opener. Coach Lonergan was weary of the over-confidence, and the final score proved his fears correct.
Gwinn had a hard time keeping the Bronco offense off of the field in the first half as the Bark River – Harriss offense ate up over 17 of the 24 minutes. Gwinn’s only score of the game came in the 2nd quarter by a 51 yard TD run from running back, Nate Chiles.
Going into the half, Gwinn was 22 to 6. Gwinn’s defense, led by line backer Carl Peterson, held the Bark River-Harris offense to 6 points in the 2nd half.
For Bark River-Harris, #8 Noah Gagne was the player of the game. He had multiple touches and averaged over 6 yards a carry. Bark River Harris beat Gwinn 28 to 6.
Going into week 2 of the high school football season, Gwinn travels to Manistique. Both teams lost their first game, and both teams put up 6 points in their opener. I had a chance to talk to Assistant Coaches, Derek Nyquist and Brad Macario this week, and they feel the team needed this first game to get their feet under them. It’s a new year, a new head coach, new offensive plays, new defensive plays, and its a new week for the Modeltowners. Gwinn takes on the Manistique Emeralds in Manistique this Thursday at 7pm.
