West Ishpeming, MI – March 9, 2021 – The Gwinn Modeltowners Girls Basketball team attempted to get in the win column for the first time this season against the Westwood Patriots on Tuesday night. Gwinn outscored Westwood 9-7 in the second quarter, but the first quarter dug the Modeltowners into a 14-3 hole. The Patriots outscored Gwinn 30-11 in the second half en route to a 51-23 victory, knocking the Modeltowners to 0-8 on the year. Travis Nelson had the call live from Westwood High School streaming live on foxsportsmarquette.com

1st Half:

Both teams took a while to get going on offense, but the Patriots raced out to a 6-0 lead with fast-break baskets from Megan Marta and Natalie Prophet. That early run caused Gwinn to chase points the entire game, and turnovers leading to open layups were an issue for the Modeltowners. Gwinn scored three points in the opening period with a jumper from Mackenzie Malette and a free throw from Elliina Miilu. However, Westwood scored 14 points and led by 11 at the quarter’s end.

End of 1st: Westwood Patriots 14, Gwinn Modeltowners 3

The Modeltowners weren’t going away quietly in the second quarter, they made it a game. Gwinn switched to a zone defense, and it gave Westwood’s offense all sorts of problems. Tianna Taylor started getting going for Gwinn in the second, and the team cut Westwood’s lead into single digits headed into halftime. Outscoring the Patriots 9-7 in the second quarter, Gwinn cut its deficit to 21-12.

Halftime: Westwood Patriots 21, Gwinn Modeltowners 12

2nd Half:

Gwinn had all of the momentum heading into the second half, but Westwood took it right back in the beginning of the third. The Patriots scored 10 straight points to start the half led by Prophet and Ellie Miller, and led Gwinn 31-12. The lead only began to loom larger, and the Modeltowners’ offense was struggling against the aggressive Westwood defense. After three quarters of play, Gwinn trailed by 23.

End of 3rd: Westwood Patriots 41, Gwinn Modeltowners 18
