Marquette, MIOctober 31, 2020 – The Marquette Redmen varsity football team rides the wind to victory against the Reeths-Puffer Rockets in playoff football this afternoon on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 and 103 WFXD.

High winds made going to the air a tall order for the Redmen, but nothing could stop Marquette from their dominant victory this afternoon.

The Rockets had a promising first drive after the Redmen went three and out to start the game. Reeths-Puffer inched ever closer to the end zone, but the Marquette defense made it difficult. Gideon Bell came up with the sack to back up the Rockets. It looked as though they would recover, but an incomplete pass would turn it over to Marquette in a scoreless first quarter with under five minutes to go.

Marquette made up for lost time with their second possession. Desmond Mullen made moves with a 49-yard run to the end zone to put some points up on the board. The Redmen took the lead at 6-0 over the Rockets after the wind stymied the kick.

Ethan Richards had a huge interception to give Marquette the ball with just a few minutes to go in the quarter. The Redmen would get down to 2nd and 1 at the Rockets’ 15-yard line before time ran out.

The Redmen earned their Halloween treats with a dominant victory!

The Redmen wasted no time with a 15-yard touchdown pass to start things off in the second quarter. Austin Ridl found Ty Lotterman in spite of the wind to improve to 12-0 in the first half.

Marquette quickly took over after the Rockets went three and out, though their next drive lacked promise. However, the Redmen produced a little magic to turn things around. Desmond Mullen would eventually punch it in to give the Redmen an 18-0 lead over the Rockets.

Justin Wenk came up with a massive tackle to take the wind out of the Rockets’ sails on their next drive. Reeths-Puffer went on to punt the ball away only to have Redmen Wyatt Kuhlman block the punt, scoop it up, and run straight into the end zone. Marquette improved to 24-0 with five minutes left in the second quarter.

The Redmen again found themselves deep in Rockets territory as halftime drew nearer. Austin Ridl found David Eberhard on a 13-yard touchdown pass to improve the Redmen to 31-0 going into the break.

Desmond Mullen started things off with an interception to give the Redmen a chance to start a running clock right out of the gate in the third quarter. The ensuing drive did not take shape, however. The Rockets took over with the hopes of making something happen against the Redmen.

Reeths-Puffer did not get the chance as this time Jordan DeMay came up with the interception against the Rockets. A Brady Wright 18-yard run got the Redmen down to the five-yard line. Ridl made the five-yard run into the end zone himself. The score improved to 38-0 to trigger the running clock, any promise of a Reeths-Puffer comeback all but extinguished.

The clock rolled on as things moved quickly into the final quarter of play. Reeths-Puffer did not give up, but ultimately could not overcome a shutout delivered handily by the Redmen. Marquette’s 38-0 victory will send them to Mount Pleasant against the Oilers.

Tune in to hear the Redmen take on the Mount Pleasant Oilers on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 and 103 WFXD. Date and time TBA.
