It was senior night tonight in Marquette as the Redmen senior players were honored ahead of their bout against Houghton. As things got underway, Marquette stayed in the Houghton zone a fair amount, but it was slow going in the scoreless early minutes of the game.
A quick power play goal from Andrew Fedrizzi, assisted by Ansel Frost and Owen Riipi, injected a little life into the game. The Redmen led the Gremlins 1-0 at the 11:29 mark in the opening period.
The Redmen nearly closed out the period with another goal to try to make it 2-0 going into the second. Some cheering ensued after a seemingly successful shot straight into the Gremlins’ net, but the goal was waved off as the buzzer sounded. The Redmen still carried their 1-0 lead over a hungry Houghton squad going into the break.
Things got off to a slow start again in the second period, but the energy picked up quickly when Marquette scored their second goal with 10 minutes to go. Ethan Phillips, with help from Fedrizzi and Liam Beerman, found the back of the net for a power play goal to go 2-0 over the Gremlins.
The characteristic Redmen hustle was back. Marquette went 18 shots on goal to Houghton’s 5 in the period. They carried their 2-0 lead into the third.
The Gremlins, playing for the conference championship title, found some life in their game early in the third period. Houghton scored a power play goal at the 3:15 mark to go 2-1 behind the Redmen.
Marquette responded with a goal from Dylan Baldwin, with assists from Jacob Garrow and Evan Kroll, to widen their lead to 3-1, where the score would stay. The Redmen skated to their final win of the regular season to improve to 21-4 on the season.
