Marquette, MI – January 26, 2019 – The Marquette Redmen Varsity Hockey team pulled off their 12th win in a row with a 3-0 victory over the Gross Pointe South Blue Devils this afternoon on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
The Redmen responded well to a lot of pressure in an even match-up against the Blue Devils. Goalie Tyler Bergwall played an exceptional game to add to Marquette’s stack of shutouts this season.
It was a slow start for the Redmen as Marquette and Gross Pointe South took their time feeling each other out.
Bergwall had several nice saves to hold the Blue Devils at bay and the evenly-matched bout resulted in a scoreless first period. Gross Pointe South edged out Marquette with nine shots on goal to the Redmen’s five.
The Redmen defense was tested in the second period. Both teams fought for control throughout and a Gross Pointe South power play seemed a break in favor of the Blue Devils.
Gaetanno Cammarata had something to say about that, however, and buried the first goal of the game with help from Tanner Phillips.
The short-handed goal really turned the tides as Marquette put their backs into it to hold the 1-0 lead going into the final period.
Gross Pointe South responded in kind as they started out the third period with some aggressive play. Another Bergwall save at a crucial moment kept the lid on the Blue Devils’ offense.
Marquette survived another penalty kill to protect their one-goal lead.
The final two goals of the game came late in the third period. Tanner Phillips, with help from Joseph Luke and Nick Leafers, found the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
A Sean O’Connor goal, with a Gaetanno Cammarata assist, followed shortly thereafter and put the final nail in the coffin in the 3-0 victory against the Blue Devils.
The Redmen will be back on the ice against Salem High School for the Michigan Public High School Showcase on Thursday, February 7th on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9. Time to be determined.
