Marquette Redettes Basketball Team Defeats Undefeated Houghton Gremlins 43-40
- Updated: February 16, 2017

Marquette, MI- February 16, 2017- Tonight was a battle of two juggernauts in the Upper Peninsula as it was a rematch from a couple weeks back when both the Marquette Redettes and Undefeated Houghton Gremlins went to overtime. Well, it was another tight one in this meeting as it would once again come down to a single possession game.
The first quarter was very tight and tense, everyone in the gym knows that this is a battle of two very tough teams. It was Houghton getting out to a lead first as they would sink a 3 point basket to open the scoring. That would be the largest lead the Gremlins would ever get as Marquette would eventually grab a lead for themselves. But it would be Houghton who comes out on top after one 12-11.
The Redettes caught fire in the second quarter as they would go on a 9-0 run during the frame. They would actually add 22 points to their total in the quarter and the Gremlins would only add another 12. Marquette would hold the largest lead of the game to end the half as they would have the upper hand heading into the break 32-24.
Well the third quarter was played with a much slower pace than the second, as neither team would scoring in the double digits. This must have been a credit to both coaching staffs as they seemed to make the right defensive adjustments. It was a tough first few minutes for either team as no one would be able to sink a basket before Houghton got a couple of free throws. Marquette led heading into the fourth 37-32.
The style of play in this game was a tale of two halves. In the first half you saw a lot more scoring but as the game progressed you saw both teams tighten up defensively as every possession became more and more important. It was an outstanding game played and coached by the Redettes as they played a flawless game when they had to in order to defeat the undefeated Gremlins. Marquette wins this one 43-40.
