Tyrann Mathieu: ‘I’m definitely back to being myself physically’

Arizona Cardinals free safety Tyrann Mathieu is back on the gridiron making plays, like the interception he made against the Chicago Bears in his team’s third preseason game, after having finished his last two seasons on the injured reserve list.

Mathieu joined The Jim Rome Show Wednesday on CBS Sports Radio and talked about his health.

“I’m definitely back to being myself physically,” Mathieu said. “So it’s going to continue to build on that, like I said, having two major knee injuries kind of pokes at your confidence, it pokes at your swagger, but I feel like I’ve been recovered from all those things pretty well, so I’m really excited about this year.”

When Mathieu was asked if there is anyone in the league who can do what he can when healthy, the 25-year-old didn’t shy away.

“No, no I don’t think so,” Mathieu told Rome. “Obviously there’s a lot of great guys in this league that can do a lot of different things, but when I feel like I’m healthy, I’m probably the most versatile player in the league, and I probably do the most for my team just as far as just game plan. So like I said, I’m really excited about this year. I’m healthy, I’m feeling great. I’m in a great place mentally and physically, obviously, but also spiritually and emotionally, so it will be a great year for me.”

The versatile 2015 Pro Bowler also shared what players present the biggest problems in the league.

“Guys like Julio Jones, anytime he’s on the schedule. Doug Baldwin, who is ultra-competitive as well. I think those two guys,” Mathieu said. “And I actually get a chance to play against Doug twice a year, so I always get excited playing against him, because I know he’s going to get targets and he loves to block, so I always get excited for guys like that who are really just ultra-competitors.”
