Takeo Spikes talks about his new book ‘Behind The Mask’ on The Jim Rome Show

Takeo Spikes was one of the best linebackers in football for 15 seasons. Now at 40-years old, the retired Spikes has turned author. In Spikes’ new book, Behind the Mask, he shares stories from multiple former NFL linebacker greats, such as Derrick Brooks, Mike Singletary, and Chuck Bednarik.

Spikes joined The Jim Rome Show Friday on CBS Sports Radio and talked about his book and spending so much quality time with the former greats.

“The conversations are priceless, and the reason why is these guys they give me their most intimate thoughts,” Spikes said. “Those conversations, I love to have them, because it brings just more awareness and lets everybody know that there’s so much more to us than having the mask on. But when you go behind the mask, you find out why is this guy motivated. What makes him tick, what makes him want to be great.”

Spikes said the former players had a single defining moments where they knew they could be a special. The two-time Pro Bowler said his happened when his father brought home a video tape produced by Lou Holtz taking about how to become a champion.

“It talked about having your daily log and setting up a blue print, a plan for you to be able to succeed with having goal,” Spike said.

“So once I saw that tape, my father gave it to me, it was easy after that because from that point on, I knew what I wanted to be, and so when I started writing down my goals and I taped them up on the wall, it was the first thing I saw when I woke up in the morning, and it was the last thing I saw before I went to bed.

“And for me, it was the accountability factor that came along with it, that held me accountable. Because I knew, if you asked me a question, I could lie to you, I could lie to my mother, I could lie to my father, but at the end of the day, by me having a simple piece of paper on the wall with my goals and my daily musts, I knew I could not lie to myself, because at the end of the day, that’s something I would have to lie down with.”
