Mark Helfrich on Nebraska hiring Mike Riley: ‘I didn’t see it coming’

Oregon’s Mark Helfrich admitted he was surprised to hear longtime Oregon State head coach Mike Riley had been hired by Nebraska, but has the utmost faith that the 61-year old will get the job done.

“I didn’t see it coming,” Helfrich told The Jim Rome Show. “He’s had a lot of success here and obviously that’s a storied, tradition rich place, he’ll do a great job.”

Helfrich was asked if Nebraska had put in a request to speak with his offensive coordinator and former Cornhusker quarterback Scott Frost about the head coaching opening.

“No, not with regard to that,” said Helfrich. “Frosty’s a guy who does a great job, he’s a great person first and foremost, a heck of a coach, and we’re obviously excited to keep him hopefully for a long time.”

Helfrich shared his approach on how he handles inquires about Frost or any of his assistant coaches.

“Honesty, truth, its real simple if somebody had a better situation for them, that’s truly better personally and professionally, I’ll do everything in my power to help them out,” said Helfrich. “Our guys, our staff is awesome, we have a bunch of guys that would be very well qualified to lead programs.”
