Jim Mora’s advice for Brett Hundley: “Go watch Aaron (Rodgers)”

Having spent years in the NFL as a coach, current UCLA head man Jim Mora expected Brett Hundley to be drafted higher than he was in last week’s draft. Hundley was selected by the Green Bay Packers with the 127th overall pick in the draft’s fifth round, a longer wait than Mora anticipated.

“I was surprised, I wasn’t stunned,” Mora told The Jim Rome Show. “I’ve been in so many drafts; I understand how fluid of an event it is. Every pick kind of changes the dynamic of the entire draft. So really, in the first round every ten minutes the dynamics change, and then the 2 and 3rd rounds every four or five minutes things change.

“And you just never know what’s going to happen. So I don’t know why Brett dropped to the fifth, I thought he was going to be a 2nd rounder, maybe at the latest 3rd, so yeah I was surprised, but like I said not stunned.”

Mora sees Hundley’s slide as a positive now.

“Brett is in a great situation, he’s going to one of the finest organizations in all of sports, there’s stability there,” said Mora. “He gets to play for Mike McCarthy who you know earned his respect as a coach, as a quarterback coach, he’s very well versed in quarterback play, and he gets to sit and watch and learn from one of the best in the game in Aaron Rodgers, and I think Aaron will help him.”

The head coach’s advice for Hundley was clear.

“Go watch Aaron (Rodgers),” Mora said of the Green Bay star. “Not just how he practices, but how he is in meetings, how he takes notes, how he interacts with the other players on the team, how he is with the offensive line and receivers, how he handles the media, how he is in the community, how he handles his life because he’s been incredibly successful and there’s so much for you to learn from him.”

Mora believes Hundley has a bright future in the league, in time.

“Whether Brett ever takes over for Aaron Rodgers or not, I don’t know, but I think at some point in his career he will be a starter and a really successful one,” said Mora. “He’s got all the intangibles you need, but he’s like every other quarterback that’s entering the draft, whether it’s (Jameis) Winston or (Marcus) Mariota, he’s got development that he needs to have taken place.”

For the time being, Mora explained what the Packers organization will be getting in Hundley.

“Green Bay got a high character young man. I mean this is a tremendous young man,” said Mora.
