Erv’s Vision

It didn’t take Magic Johnson long. Just two weeks after agreeing to serve as an advisor to Jeanie Buss “on all business and basketball matters,” Magic has seen a vision for the future: And it’s MAGIC JOHNSON running the show.

Earv is making his play for the throne of Laker Land — and he’s doing it in plain sight, telling ANYBODY who will listen that he wants to run the show. “Right now I’m advising. I get that,” Magic told USA TODAY. “But at the end of the day, then we all got to come together and somebody’s got to say, ‘I’m making the final call,’ all right? And who’s that going to be? So, we’ll see what happens.”

We’ll see what happens. This has DISASTER written all over it. How many times have we seen a basketball team reach back to a former player and ask them to run the team? And how many times has it worked…? And that’s BEFORE you consider the 10,000 other things Magic has his hands in — and the fact that the Lakers already tried this with Magic like 25 years ago, and Earv coached the squad to a .313 winning percentage — hell, Luke Walton’s doing better than that.

Now, I get it: The Jim Buss era is a disaster. The team’s org chart looks like a toddler scribbled for 20 minutes with crayons and then gave up. So if this is Jeannie sending Fredo to Vegas, then I’m all for it. So clean house. Start fresh. But turning the keys over to Earv is another thing. Especially if he’s going to blow the place up with pearls of wisdom like the ones he drops from time to time on Twitter:

Hard-hitting revelations akin to Water is Wet and The Sky is Blue. Like:

“You can’t become it if you don’t dream it.”

“The most important thing in business is knowing your customer. Then you have to speak to that customer.”

Those last two Earv is taking credit for — just a few of the pearls he’s throwing out there on his new website “THE PLAYBOOK.”

Because you don’t need Magic to fix the Lakers. You just need to KEEP LOSING. Tank. Find a way to keep that Top 3 protected first round pick and let Walton build around Julius Randle, D’Angelo Russell and Brandon Ingram. And then find a free agent who’ll come carry the torch as the Lakers wait out the Warriors run.

So unless Magic is turning back the clock and throwing no-look passes to Worthy and Kareem, Jeanie could just buy a bag of fortune cookies and a self-help book and save herself a lot of money.
