Derek Carr on Tony Sparano: ‘I want him to be around’

Oakland Raiders’ quarterback Derek Carr said he absolutely wants the organization to bring back interim head coach Tony Sparano next season. The Raiders have won two of their last three games under the former Dolphins coach.

“Coach Sparano is my coach, he’s my leader,” Carr told The Jim Rome Show. “Obviously I love him. I want him to be around.”

Although Carr made it clear what he’d prefer, the rookie QB doesn’t anticipate having any influence on whether or not Sparano stays with the organization.

“I honestly don’t make those decisions or get anywhere near those things,” said Carr. “In what capacity will they bring him back, will he go somewhere else? I don’t know, I don’t know how those things work. I just know this, I love the guy he’s awesome and a joy to be around.”

The rookie also talked about the online friendship he’s developed with rap icon and Raider fan MC Hammer. Carr said Hammer’s been giving him encouragement and support since being drafted by the Silver and Black last May.

“I’ve been in communication with him, obviously through Twitter,” said Carr. “At first I thought it was a joke. I was like this can’t be really him the first time [Hammer tweeted] when I was drafted, but we go back and forth, we’ve done it a couple times now and it’s awesome. I guess I got to start learning some of the dance moves so I can do it in the end zone one time for him.”
