Del Rio on Derek Carr: ‘A special young talent’

Growing up in the bay area, new Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio couldn’t be happier about returning home and has said he’s been embraced by the Silver and Black community since taking the job.

“It’s a little bit of dream come true,” Del Rio told The Jim Rome Show. “I grew up in Hayward, which is about 10 miles away. So being able to come home from a storied franchise like this and the welcome I’ve had from the Raider Nation has been awesome.”

With the Raiders absent from the playoffs since 2002, Del Rio knows he’s got his work to do, but believes they have someone to build around in quarterback Derek Carr.

“Carr’s a special young talent,” said Del Rio. “He’s got a really quick release, good decision maker; he’s shown some of that grit we’re looking for, some of that toughness, so he’s a guy that we feel like we have an opportunity to build around.”

Del Rio admitted rumors about the Raiders possibly moving to Los Angeles did come up in his meetings with owner Mark Davis, but they are still just rumors for now.

“Those discussions absolutely came up and my question was ‘Are we going to stay in Oakland?’ and he said ‘My intent is to keep the team there’”, said Del Rio. “Look I’m from this area, and that’s exactly what I wanted to hear. He’s trying to keep the team here and hopefully that will happen.”

As for if the franchise did move to Los Angeles, the former Trojan could think of worse places, but wants to stay in Oakland.

“Well I went to school at Southern Cal, so if that has to happen, that has to happen,” said Del Rio. “But right now we’re here, committed to being here, and I’m looking forward to helping the Raiders get back to where they belong.”
