Crazy College Football Weekend

Another crazy, crazy weekend in college football where almost nothing went as planned, and the expected is now the unexpected. Well, except Tennessee firing Butch Jones. That was expected. We all knew that was coming.

But chaos reigned supreme everywhere else and that playoff bracket that was over-flowing with candidates heading into the weekend got TOTALLY TRASHED.

#1 Georgia GONE. Number 3 Notre Dame — BOOM, OUTTA HERE. TCU is out. Washington’s DONE. Ohio State woke up just in time to ship Michigan State back to East Lansing in a pine box. And it took exactly one weekend to shake up a College Football Playoff race that was just coming into focus.

What did we learn? That the road is no place to take an inexperienced quarterback. Auburn sold out to stop the run and dared Georgia freshman quarterback Jake Fromm to beat them. He couldn’t. Notre Dame thought Brandon Wimbush was ready to head to Miami and beat the Canes. Instead the Irish imploded and that Miami turnover chain got passed around like the 7th Floor Crew used to do it. And down in StarkVegas, Mississippi State took Bama to the brink but just couldn’t finish: they came that close to taking the Tide out — and giving Dan Mullen a win for the ages.

Apparently, the U is back. Or Notre Dame simply wasn’t who we thought they were. Or both. And. The long road Wisconsin had to make just to get into the tourney just got a helluva lot shorter — the only points they gave up to Iowa came on Pick Sixes, holding a Hawkeyes team that laid 55 on Ohio State to just 66 total yards.

And all the talk that the SEC would have two spots in the 4-team bracket – maybe…but just had the wrong two teams, Auburn laying it on Georgia and setting up another Iron Bowl that should be a classic.

So Tuesday night becomes as important as any Saturday. That’s when the committee gets back together and tries to make sense of what just happened. And outside of Bama, everything else is pretty much up for grabs. Because Oklahoma’s win over TCU put the paddles to the Sooners chest. Clemson and Miami are on a collision course in the ACC title game. Wisconsin gets a chance to beat the hell out of Michigan next weekend before it has to go through Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game and Georgia still isn’t out of it, even though Auburn left them for dead this weekend.

It took one Saturday to shatter everything we knew. And the best part is that the chaos is just getting started.
