Bill O’Brien on J.J. Watt: ‘I can’t compare him to anybody’

Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien said he’s never been around a football player like defensive lineman J.J. Watt, the NFL’s 2012 Defensive Player of the Year. The first year Texans head coach said Watt’s combination of size, athletic ability and work ethic is unmatched.

“I can’t compare him to anybody… because he’s so long, he’s so explosive,” O’Brien told The Jim Rome Show. “The thing that sets him apart, he has a relentless, relentless way of playing. Like the guy never takes a play off. I mean it’s amazing. The guy plays lights out on every single play. He disrupts the game in a lot of different ways.”

O’Brien knew before his first game as Texans head coach what kind of leader he had in Watt.

“Training camp hadn’t even started yet, I couldn’t sleep, I came in a little early had to be 4 in the morning,” said O’Brien. “I hear music coming out of the weight room and there’s the guy in the weight room doing plyometrics, he’s lifting, he’s squatting. I said ‘What are you doing here? It’s 4 in the morning” and he said “I have a lot of obligations today, so I want to get my workout in early.” I mean it’s that type of guy you’re really looking for to lead your team or be one of the leaders of your team. Just his workout attitude, and the way he approaches the game.”

O’Brien believes Watt’s approach will help teammate Jadeveon Clowney, the 2014 No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

“I think being around J.J. will really help the kid,” said O’Brien. “J.D. (Jadeveon Clowney) is what we call him. J.D.’s been injured. He had a sports hernia he’s had a concussion, he’s coming off a knee [injury], he actually did a lot of good things in the game last week. So now is the time for him. He’s healthy he’s ready to go and I think being around J.J. and seeing that work ethic, that’s always going to help a young player no matter who it is. I can see that with Clowney, he was out there at practice yesterday really practicing hard and trying to do the things were coaching him to do. And there’s no doubt in my mind that J.D.’s going to be a real good player in this league.”
