Ben’s Locker Room

Week 10 of the NFL season starts tonight and I’m starting to get the feeling that Ben McAdoo isn’t going to turn around the Giants this year. Not when they’re coming off a 51-17 beatdown at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams. Things have gotten so bad that they’re facing the 49ers this weekend and I’m starting to think that I might rather be the 0-9 49ers than the 1-7 Giants. Even the fact that this is a discussion tells you how far the Giants have fallen. But there might actually be something to it because at least the 49ers have some hope after they traded for Jimmy Garoppolo, the Giants are just hoping this season ends as quickly as possible.

And if you want more evidence of how bad things have gotten in New York, ask Giants safety Landon Collins who spoke up on McAdoo’s behalf: “I wouldn’t say he lost the team. I have the utmost respect for him. He’s been doing a great job. Just trying to figure it out like we all are.”

So why is Landon Collins sticking up for his head coach and saying that he hasn’t lost the team and that “he’s been doing a great job” a bad thing? Because the only reason you’re saying he hasn’t lost the team is if other guys are saying the head coach has lost the team. And that’s exactly what two anonymous Giants said to ESPN’s Josina Anderson.

One player said: “McAdoo has lost this team. He’s got us going 80 percent on Saturdays before we get on a plane to play a game. It’s wild. Changed our off day. He’s dishing out fines like crazy. Suspended two of our stars when we need them the most. Throws us under the bus all the time. He’s ran us into the ground and people wonder why we’ve been getting got.”

And the other player said: “Guys are giving up on the season and nothing’s being done. Guys just don’t care anymore.”

And they said that before the Giants got smashed by the Rams. Since that game, one of the anonymous players said “I feel like we really don’t got a leader in Coach McAdoo.” And the other said, McAdoo “didn’t really have anything for us” at halftime of the Rams game.

Well, I know for a fact the claim that he didn’t have anything for the Giants at halftime is false, because when that topic came up in the postgame presser, McAdoo went off:

I mean if you aren’t ready to run through a wall and tackle a building after hearing that, that’s on you, not on Coach McAdoo.

As for the larger issue of whether he’s lost the locker room, if that conversation is out there and guys are going with anonymous quotes about the Saturday workouts, changing off days, and internal fines, that’s a sign that things are pretty much a tire fire. And no, it’s not cool for guys to rip their coach anonymously. It would mean a whole lot more if those guys put their names on it and owned their roles in it.

I get Landon Collins standing up for his coach. I like that and I respect it. Just as I respect Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who was one of the players suspended by McAdoo this season, saying that I seen a lot of locker rooms, and I know for a fact this locker room ain’t lost. I seen a lost locker room. I know what guys do. They come to practice lackadaisical. They don’t have a care. Nothing really matters no more. And I don’t see that happening.”

The fact that one of the guys who was suspended is saying that carries a lot of weight, because he could easily be bitter and bent about the coach, but it doesn’t sound like he is.

So a ton of respect for what Collins and DRC said, but here’s the thing – the Giants are 1-7, they’ve been steamrolled in back to back games. And granted, McAdoo isn’t the one out there missing tackles and blowing coverages, the players have to wear a lot of this, too. And the team has had a lot of injuries.

But if McAdoo hasn’t lost the locker room yet, then that means it could get a whole lot worse. If a 34-point loss at home is what happens when everyone’s on the same page, pulling together, and following their coach, then McAdoo is just a terrible coach and they’re a terrible team. I mean at this point, getting confirmation that he’s lost the locker room would almost be a good thing because at least that’s an explanation for how this has all imploded so horribly.
