Aaron Rodgers isn’t surprised by recent CTE study

Green Bay Packers MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers was the first guest on The Jim Rome Podcast which debuted Tuesday and said he was not surprised with neuropathologist Dr. Ann McKee’s findings of 110 out of 111 former NFL players she studied were found to have chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or C.T.E., the degenerative disease believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head.

“It’s actually an issue. I think it’s something that all of us football players have to think about,” Rodgers told Rome. “It’s on your mind, how you are going to be able to function at 40, at 50, hopefully at 60, at 70? How’s your cognitive brain function going to be? How’s your motor skills? How are those going to be? Because we play an impact sport.

“Fortunately for me, it’s a position where there are not as many head collisions, but it’s definitely something that’s on all of our minds.”

The Super Bowl XLV champion is intrigued by the continued research on the subject.

“I’m interested to see where science goes now in really explaining to us the ramifications of it, and also how we can start to prevent some of the issues, and really CTE, coming on,” Rodgers said. “Science is really in an interesting place right now with performance diets, how that affects your performance. Diets, how that affects your performance. Natural supplements that help you and your body. Obviously the vitamin world is interesting. But what is science now going to do to your brain? Is there going to be natural substances that occur in nature that we can take which is going to help our brain function? Hopefully that will happen.”

However, the 6-time Pro Bowler did say that the current players need to first put the priority on helping those who played before them.

“I think we need to continue to help out our former players as we look to this next CBA,” Rodgers said. “Continue to find ways to take care of those guys, because they laid the ground work for us and a lot of them are dealing with some serious issues.”
